Resources Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Post-it notes (various colours)
  • Large poster paper
  • Markers or coloured pencils
  • Gentle background music for activity time
  • Scenario cards (pre-prepared, with prompts related to health choices)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 mins)

  • Engagement Question: Begin with a simple question to the class: "What do you think is a healthy lifestyle?" Allow for 2-3 responses and write key terms on the whiteboard.
  • Objective Sharing: Explain that today’s focus is understanding both physical and mental health components of a balanced lifestyle.

2. Group Activity – Factors of Health (10 mins)

  • Grouping: Divide the class into small groups of four. Assign each group a colour of post-it notes.
  • Task: Each group will brainstorm and write down factors for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, focusing on:
    • Physical health (e.g., exercise, nutrition)
    • Mental health (e.g., stress management, social connections)
  • Time Allocation: Inform them they have 5-7 minutes to complete this task.
  • Collation: After time is up, each group sticks their post-it notes on a large poster paper. Groups will briefly share their factors with the class, compiling a master list on the board.

3. Case Scenarios Discussion (10 mins)

  • Scenario Distribution: Hand out pre-prepared scenario cards to each group. Each card contains different lifestyle situations (e.g., a friend feeling stressed from schoolwork, someone who enjoys junk food).
  • Task: Groups will discuss how the person in their scenario can improve their physical and mental health. Each group will prepare a short presentation (2-3 minutes) summarising their discussion.
  • Presentation: Allow each group to present their scenario along with their suggestions. Encourage class members to contribute additional ideas or support for the scenarios discussed.

4. Reflection and Wrap-Up (5 mins)

  • Personal Reflection: Ask students to think about one thing they can do to improve their own health and well-being. They can write it down on a post-it note.
  • Share: Volunteers can share their reflections as a way to inspire others.
  • Closing Summary: Summarise the key factors discussed and emphasize the importance of a balanced approach to both physical and mental health.

Assessment

  • Observational Assessment: Monitor group discussions and presentations for understanding and engagement.
  • Post-it Note Reflection: Evaluate students' contributions to their personal reflection to assess their grasp of lesson concepts.

Differentiation

  • For Advanced Learners: Encourage deeper discussions on mental health topics or current events related to health.
  • For Struggling Learners: Provide prompting questions and use visual aids to help them contribute to group discussions.

Additional Notes

  • Encourage an atmosphere of respect and understanding throughout the lesson, especially when discussing mental health.
  • Ensure students understand that there is no right or wrong answer in terms of opinions shared and that every contribution is valued.

This lesson plan aims to empower students with the knowledge and tools necessary for leading a balanced and healthy lifestyle, preparing them for both current and future challenges related to their overall well-being.
