Bean Exploration
Overview
This 60-minute session is designed for Year 2 students (age 6-7), focusing on the internal structure of a bean. It supports the UK National Curriculum for Science (Key Stage 1: Plants) and fosters curiosity, observation skills, and scientific vocabulary. The lesson uses a hands-on, enquiry-based approach tailored for a class size of 30, but with activities adaptable for small groups or pairs.

Lesson Breakdown
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin with a class discussion: “What do you think is inside a bean?”
- Show whole beans and ask pupils to predict what might be inside.
- Introduce key vocabulary: seed coat, embryo, cotyledon.
- Explain the purpose of each: seed coat protects, embryo is the baby plant, cotyledon stores food.
2. Demonstration (10 minutes)
- Teacher dissects a bean to reveal the parts, using magnifying glass and explaining.
- Display the large poster and label the parts together as a class.
- Encourage children to ask questions, reinforcing new terms.
3. Hands-on Activity: Bean Dissection (25 minutes)
- Pupils work in pairs (to share materials and encourage communication).
- Each pair carefully splits their bean using plastic knives or fingers.
- Use magnifying glasses to observe inside the bean.
- Children label the bean parts on their worksheet.
- Teachers circulate to support, ask open questions (e.g. “What do you see here?” “How do you think this cotyledon helps the baby plant?”).
