Lesson structure (40 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and recall. Teacher opens the habitat mystery slides and shows an image of an animal in its environment, asking, “What would happen if this animal had no shelter or water?” Students identify the animal, suggest its habitat and recall what living things need to survive.

  2. 5–11 min · Teach habitat needs. Teacher uses the habitat needs slides to define habitat as an animal’s natural home and introduces food, water, shelter and space, using simple examples such as a hedgehog in a garden or a frog near a pond. Students answer questions and identify each need in the examples.

  3. 11–15 min · Model the task. Student presents the model, explaining each label with the sentence frame, “This is ___; it helps my animal because ___.” Teacher asks, “Which feature is most important?” and “How might your animal depend on a plant or another living thing?”

  6. 36–40 min · Review and exit check. Teacher returns to the review and exit slide and asks the student to name the four basic needs without prompts. Student completes the final box on the mini-habitat planning sheet, drawing one feature and writing or dictating how it helps the animal survive.
