Overview

This 60-minute lesson is designed for a class of 26 students, focusing on recapping climate zones using maps and introducing the concept of climate change and its effects on our planet. Lesson Structure

  • Remove the map and give students a blank world outline to label or colour-code as many climate zones as they can remember.

Recap of Climate Zones + Introduction to Climate Change

  • Show climate zone map alongside temperature/rainfall data to demonstrate why zones differ.

5. Plenary – 5 minutes

  • On post-it notes, students write one new thing they learned and one personal action they can take to help the planet (e.g., recycling, saving energy).
  • These are pinned on a “Climate Change Action” board in the classroom as a visual reminder.
  • Teacher invites a few students to share their action statements aloud.

  • Support: Provide labelled maps with key terms for lower ability learners. Pair them with stronger peers for discussion tasks.
  • Challenge: Ask higher ability students to research one consequence of climate change for a specific climate zone and provide an explanation during the debate.
