Overview

This 45-minute lesson delivers an engaging, hands-on exploration of community resources and services specific to Kingsthorpe. It forms Lesson 5 in the unit “Exploring People and Communities.” Students will develop their understanding of how various local facilities meet community needs, linking to national curriculum requirements for Geography at Key Stage 3.

Learning Objectives

Lesson Structure

Starter (5 minutes)

Begin by asking: “What services or facilities do you use in Kingsthorpe?” Take a brief class brainstorm to gather examples.
Introduce the lesson’s aim: to identify and categorise community resources to understand how they support local life.

Introduction to Activity (5 minutes)

Show the large map of Kingsthorpe and quickly point out some familiar landmarks.
Explain the picture cards activity: students will work in pairs or small groups to sort the picture cards into different categories based on what type of service or resource they represent.

Main Activity - Categorising Community Resources (25 minutes)

Divide students into groups of 2–3. Hand out shuffled picture cards and a worksheet with category headings (e.g., Health, Education, Safety, Leisure, Shopping, Transport).
Students discuss and decide where each card should be placed, writing reasons on sticky notes or on the worksheet. Encourage them to consider:
What is the primary purpose of the service?
Who uses this service and why?
How does this service help support the community?
Circulate to prompt deeper thinking and help students make connections to real-life Kingsthorpe community needs.
After sorting, groups share a few examples of their categorizations and reasoning with the class.

Plenary and Reflection (10 minutes)

Summarise key learning points, emphasising how community resources interconnect and contribute to quality of life.
Pose reflective questions for class discussion:
What might happen if some of these services were removed?
Are there any resources Kingsthorpe needs more of?
Optionally, display a quick quiz on the board where students identify the category of selected facilities from the lesson.
Collect worksheets for informal assessment.

Formative assessment through observation of group discussions and participation.

Differentiation
