Overview

This lesson is the fifth in a six-lesson unit titled "Exploring People and Communities." It is designed for a Year 8 class of 10 students. The lesson focuses on identifying, categorising, and understanding the role of various community resources and services within Kingsthorpe. Students will engage with picture cards depicting local services, facilitating discussions about their importance and how they support the community.

Lesson Structure

Starter (5 minutes)

Objective: Activate prior knowledge and introduce lesson focus.

• Begin with a brief discussion: "What services and resources do you know about in Kingsthorpe?"
• Write down student ideas on the board, grouping them loosely into categories (e.g., schools, shops, hospitals).
• Show a quick PowerPoint slide or display real images of Kingsthorpe landmarks to provide context.

Main Activity (30 minutes)

Objective: Categorise and investigate local community services using picture cards.

Materials Required:

• Picture cards depicting a variety of community resources/services in Kingsthorpe (e.g., primary school, GP surgery, leisure centre, police station, library, post office, park).
• Large categorisation mats labelled with group headings (Healthcare, Education, Emergency Services, Recreation, Others).
• Worksheet for students to note down their findings and reflections.

Activity Steps:

1. Group Formation: Divide the class into pairs or small groups of three.
2. Sorting Task: Distribute picture cards randomly among the groups. Groups must discuss and decide which category each card belongs to on the mats. Encourage justification of choices to promote reasoning.
3. Class Discussion: After sorting, bring the groups together to discuss their choices. Highlight any interesting or surprising findings. Emphasise how these services contribute to the community’s wellbeing.
4. Deepening Understanding: Pose questions like:

• How do these services make life better for people in Kingsthorpe?
• Can you think of any services not shown on the cards?
• How might these services affect different groups in the community?

5. Reflection: Students use the worksheet to write down two examples of community services and explain their importance.

Plenary (10 minutes)

Objective: Review and consolidate learning; assess understanding.

• Facilitate a group quiz using the picture cards: the teacher describes a service’s role, and students identify the service and its category.
• Ask students to share one new thing they learned about community resources today.
• Collect worksheets for formative assessment of students’ understanding of categories and community roles.
