Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Hook Activity (5 minutes)

   • Start with a simple question: "What do you think makes our community work?"
   • Allow students to brainstorm ideas and write key words on the whiteboard.

2. Discussion (5 minutes)

   • Introduce the concept of roles and responsibilities. Explain that every member of a community has a specific role that helps others.
   • Discuss examples like “Who keeps us safe?” (police), “Who helps when we are sick?” (doctors), etc.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

1. Role Mapping (10 minutes)

   • Divide the class into small groups of 4-5.
   • Give each group a large sheet of paper and markers.
   • Instruct them to create a 'Community Role Map' by writing down various roles (from the cards provided) and branching them out with responsibilities and how they affect the community.
   • Encourage creativity with drawings or symbols.

2. Scenario Discussions (10 minutes)

   • Hand out scenario cards to each group (e.g., a new park needs to be built, there’s a lost pet, a local event needs organizing).
   • Groups discuss how different roles would contribute to solving these scenarios.
   • Each group will then share their scenario and the roles they think would be most impactful.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

1. Class Reflection (5 minutes)

   • Gather the class and ask representatives from each group to share one interesting role they discussed.
   • Facilitate a reflection on which roles they may not have considered before and why they are important.

2. Final Thoughts (5 minutes)

   • Ask students to write down one new thing they learnt about community roles on a sticky note.
   • Collect the sticky notes and place them on a designated board titled “What We’ve Learnt”.
