Overview
A 55-minute detailed lesson plan designed to help Year 2 pupils deepen their understanding of comparing numbers using greater than (>), less than (<), and equal (=) symbols. Pupils will demonstrate their grasp of the language associated with these symbols through interactive activities and formative assessment, aligned with the National Curriculum for England (Mathematics - Year 2).

Lesson Structure
1. Starter (10 minutes)
Objective: Recap symbols and language for comparing numbers
- Begin with a warm-up game using the mascots (crocodile mouths represent > or <). Teacher models the “greater than” / “less than” idea by asking pupils:
“Who does the crocodile want to eat?”
Example: Hold two numbers (e.g., 45 and 63).
Pupils say: “63 is greater than 45” or “45 is less than 63.”
- Reinforce by writing the example on the board, highlighting the correct use of the ‘greater than’ symbol (>).
- Use the mini whiteboards for pupils to write the correct sentence and symbol for 3 example pairs you give.
2. Main Activity (25 minutes)
Objective: Apply language and symbols confidently in different contexts
Activity 1: Interactive Number Card Comparisons (15 mins)
- Pupils are given number cards and symbol cards. Working in pairs, they create number pairs and use the correct symbol card to compare them.
- After placing the cards, pairs must say the sentence aloud (e.g., "27 is less than 56").
- Circulate and prompt pupils to explain their reasoning (“Why do you think 27 is less than 56?”).
Activity 2: Number Line Challenge (10 mins)
- Display the large number line and select two numbers.
- Ask individual pupils to come up, place the ‘greater than’, ‘less than’, or ‘equal to’ symbol between the numbers on the board, and use the comparative language.
- Challenge: Pupils explain what would happen if the numbers swapped places on the line.
- Reinforce understanding of numerical order and relation to position on the number line.
3. Plenary (10 minutes)
Objective: Assess and consolidate understanding of comparative language and symbols
- Quickfire round: Rapid display of two numbers. Pupils hold up the symbol card to show comparison and say the comparison sentence aloud.
- Ask targeted questions:
“Which number is greater?”
“How can you tell?”
- Conclude with pupils writing one comparison sentence (with symbols) on their mini whiteboards to show understanding. For example: “41 > 39” and say “41 is greater than 39.”
- Teacher gives immediate verbal feedback focusing on use of language as well as symbol accuracy.

- Formative Assessment throughout paired and individual activities by listening to pupils’ use of language and symbol choice.
