Components of Fitness

Lesson Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and define the health-related and skill-related components of fitness.
- Understand the importance of different components in various sports and everyday life.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of fitness components through practical activities.
- Evaluate personal strengths and areas for improvement in their own fitness levels.
Lesson Breakdown
1. Warm-Up & Introduction (10 minutes)
Objective: Prepare students physically for practical activities and introduce key concepts.
Activity:
- Dynamic warm-up (5 minutes)
- Light jogging around the area
- High knees
- Butt kicks
- Arm circles
- Bodyweight squats
- Quick discussion (5 minutes)
- Ask students: What does fitness mean to you?
- Introduce the two categories of fitness:
- Health-Related Components (Endurance, Strength, Flexibility, etc.)
- Skill-Related Components (Agility, Balance, Speed, etc.)
2. Theory & Application (15 minutes)
Objective: Relate fitness concepts to real-life sports and activities.
Activity:
- Group allocation
- Split the class into two groups (health-related vs skill-related).
- Each group must brainstorm key components of their category.
- Class discussion
- Groups present their ideas.
- Use sports examples:
- Why does a marathon runner need cardiovascular endurance?
- Why do footballers need agility and balance?
Key Learning Points:
- Health-Related Components: Cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition.
- Skill-Related Components: Agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, speed.
3. Practical Application (35 minutes)
Objective: Engage students in task-based learning to experience fitness components firsthand.
Station-Based Circuit (30 minutes)
Set up six stations, each focusing on a different component of fitness. Students work in pairs and spend 4 minutes per station before rotating.

Objective: Reduce heart rate and consolidate learning.
Cool-Down (5 minutes)
- Slow jogging to walking
- Static stretching (hamstrings, quadriceps, shoulders)
- Breathing exercises
Exit Discussion (5 minutes)
- Recap key terms: What is the difference between health and skill components?
- Ask: If you were designing training for a professional athlete, which components would you focus on? Why?
- Homework: Research and create a personalised fitness plan incorporating at least four components of fitness.

Formative Assessment:
- Observation of participation and engagement in practical tasks.

Differentiation:
- More Able: Challenge through time/rep-based targets (e.g., increase reps on the power station).
