Materials Needed

• Coloured paper or card
• Fabric scraps (e.g. felt, cotton)
• Natural materials (e.g. leaves, twigs)
• Recycled materials (e.g. bottle caps, cardboard)
• Glue sticks and PVA glue
• Scissors
• Paintbrushes and paint
• Pastels or crayons

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 Minutes)

1. Welcome and Motivation: Explain to the students that today they are going to be "material explorers". They will learn how artists use various materials to make unique and exciting designs.

2. Discussion and Brainstorming:

   • Briefly discuss with the students what "materials" are. Ask them to name a few materials they know.
   • Show examples of artwork that use different materials. Ask, "What do you think these artists used to make this piece?"

Main Activity (25 Minutes)

Exploring and Creating

1. Group Activity (5 Minutes):

   • Divide the class into small groups of 4.
   • Give each group a mix of the available materials.
   • Challenge them to feel and talk about the textures. Ask, "What does this feel like? Could this be used in art?"

2. Design Creation (20 Minutes):

   • Task the students with creating a mini artwork that combines at least three different types of materials.
   • Encourage them to think about a simple theme, like "A Day at the Park" or "Under the Sea", and how to use the materials to express it.
   • Allow them to cut, glue, paint, and shape as they see fit. Remind them to respect shared materials and space.
   • Walk around to support and encourage students' creativity, helping with any tricky materials.

Plenary (10 Minutes)

1. Showcasing Artwork:

   • Allow each group to present their artwork to the class briefly.
   • Ask each group to share which materials they used and what theme they chose.

2. Reflection and Feedback:

   • Lead a short reflection; ask questions like:
     • "What was your favourite material to work with?"
     • "What was difficult or surprising about using these materials?"
   • Offer positive feedback and celebrate the creativity displayed.

Assessment Opportunities

• Observational assessment during activities will provide insight into how students engage with materials and follow the creative process.
• Evaluate the students' ability to communicate their choices during presentations.
• Assess understanding through participation in group discussions and reflections.

Differentiation

• Offer extra guidance and support for students who might struggle with using scissors or glue.
• Challenge advanced students by asking them to include an additional material or focus on creating detailed patterns or effects.

Health & Safety Considerations

• Ensure students use scissors safely and are aware of their surroundings.
• Provide non-toxic materials, and supervise the use of glue and paint to avoid ingestion or contact with eyes.

Extension Activity

Students can create a story or a title for their artwork, elaborating more on the theme they chose and why they selected specific materials.
