Lesson Structure

1. Recap & Starter Group Discussion (10 minutes)

Activity: “Story Seeds” Group Brainstorm

• Show 3 simple story starters (on large visual cards, dyslexia-friendly font) that include colourful images:
  1. A mysterious door in the garden
  2. A talking animal in the forest
  3. A secret message found on the playground
• Ask students in small groups (3 groups of 4) to discuss what might happen next.
• Each group shares one exciting idea aloud.
• Teacher models how to describe one idea with simple adjectives and connectives.

Differentiation:

• Support from TA for students who find speaking or listening challenging by encouraging one-word or phrase responses initially.
• Prompt cards with pictures and simple vocabulary to scaffold discussion.

2. Individual Differentiated Writing Task (20 minutes)

Activity: Writing a Short Story - “Choose Your Seed”
Students select one story starter from the discussion to write a short story.

Differentiated Writing Frames Provided (printable):

• Level 1 (Emerging writers):

  • Sentence starters with capital letters and full stops highlighted.
  • Words and pictures prompts (e.g., list of simple adjectives, nouns).
  • Space for drawing to support ideas.

• Level 2 (Developing writers):

  • Partially completed story frame with prompts to add adjectives, verbs, and connectives.
  • Word bank with descriptive vocabulary and conjunctions (because, and, but).

• Level 3 (More confident writers):

  • Open-ended writing grid to plan beginning, middle, and end with suggested vocabulary extension list.
  • Encouragement to use similes or expanded noun phrases.

Teacher/TA support: Move between students, offering specific feedback and encouragement.

3. Group Finisher – Story Share & Peer Questions (7 minutes)

• Each student reads or shares their story aloud or shows their drawing-story to a partner or small group.
• Peers ask one simple question about the story (“What did the door look like?”) or give a positive comment.
• Model and practise being kind and curious listeners.

4. Secure Exit Routine – Story Quiz Game (8 minutes)

Game: “Guess the Story Seed” Quiz

• Show 6 quick clues or pictures from the story starters and additional ideas (dyslexia-friendly slide or printed cards).
• Students write or select the matching story starter or predict what happens next from multiple-choice options, differentiated:

Differentiated Quiz:

• Level 1: Matching picture to story starter (picture cards + words)
• Level 2: Multiple choice with short sentences
• Level 3: Write a full sentence answer using one learned descriptive word

Reward: Stickers or “Story Star” certificate for participation and effort.
