Objective

To help K2 students in Year 13 enhance their conversational skills in English. The goal is to enable students to engage more effectively in daily conversations, thereby meeting the UK National Curriculum's objectives for Spoken Language at Key Stage 5.

Learning Outcomes

Lesson Plan

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)

Activity: Introduction and Icebreaker

• Greet the student warmly.
• Explain the lesson's objective and outline what will be covered.
• Conduct a quick icebreaker (e.g. “Two Truths and a Lie”):
  • Each participant shares three statements about themselves, two of which are true, and one which is a lie.
  • Others guess which is the lie, fostering immediate engagement.

2. Interactive Mini-Lesson (15 minutes)

Activity: Introduction to Conversational Phrases

• Write a range of conversational phrases on the whiteboard (e.g., “How are you?”, “That sounds interesting!”, “Can you tell me more?”).
• Briefly explain each phrase and its appropriate usage.
• Play an audio clip of a daily conversation, pausing at intervals to discuss what phrases were used and why.

3. Practice (20 minutes)

Activity 1: Guided Role-Play

• Distribute role-play cards with different scenarios (e.g., “Talking about a weekend”, “Asking for directions”).
• Role-play each scenario with the student, modeling both sides of the conversation before allowing the student to take over.
• Encouragement and feedback should be frequent.

Activity 2: Flashcard Conversations

• Use flashcards with various conversation starters (e.g., “What did you have for breakfast today?”, “What’s your favourite hobby?”).
• Student picks a card and starts a conversation; the teacher responds appropriately, guiding the flow if necessary.

4. Cool-Down and Reflection (5 minutes)

Activity: Reflective Discussion

• Ask the student to reflect on one new phrase they used today and how it felt.
• Discuss any challenges they encountered and how they can overcome them in future conversations.
• End with positive reinforcement and highlight progress made during the lesson.

Homework

• Assign the student to initiate at least one small conversation at home using the phrases learned.
• Encourage the student to note down any new phrases or feedback from their conversations in a journal to be discussed in the next lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the student's ability to use conversational phrases accurately during role-plays.
• Provide immediate feedback and note areas for improvement.
• Regularly review progress against the curriculum objectives for Spoken Language at Key Stage 5.
