Objectives

• DIY National Park activity sheets
• Craft supplies (coloured paper, glue, scissors, crayons)
• Map of the UK
• Binoculars, ranger hats, and badges for role-playing activity
• Storybook: "A Trip to the National Park"

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 Minutes)

1. Greeting & Introduction to Topic:

   • Welcome the students and briefly discuss what National Parks are.
   • Show a short 3-minute video about National Parks in the UK to visualize the concept.

2. Discussion:

   • Engage the students in a discussion about what they saw in the video.
   • Ask questions: Have you ever been to a National Park? What did you see or do there?

Main Activities (35 Minutes)

Activity 1: Exploring National Parks (15 Minutes)

1. Interactive Map Activity:

   • Use the map of the UK to point out the locations of famous National Parks (e.g. Lake District, Peak District, Snowdonia).
   • Discuss the unique features of each park with the help of printed images.

2. Teacher-Led Story Time:

   • Read the storybook "A Trip to the National Park" to the class.
   • Pause occasionally to ask comprehension questions and relate parts of the story to the real National Parks pupils learned about.

Activity 2: Role-Playing as Park Rangers (20 Minutes)

1. Introduction to Role-Playing:

   • Explain to the students the role of park rangers and their importance in preserving National Parks.
   • Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a 'mini-National Park' from around the UK.

2. Role-Playing Activity:

   • Provide them with ranger hats and binoculars.
   • Give each group a scenario or task to solve, such as rescuing an animal, picking up litter or guiding tourists.
   • Allow each group to present how they handled the situation to the rest of the class.

Conclusion (15 Minutes)

1. DIY National Park:

   • Hand out activity sheets and craft supplies.
   • Instruct students to create their own National Park by filling in what they have learned (drawing animals, plants, landscapes).
   • Encourage creativity and personal touches.

2. Sharing and Review:

   • Allow students to share their DIY National Parks with the class.
   • Review the key learnings about the importance and history of National Parks.
   • Encourage students to visit a National Park with their families.

Assessment

• Observe students during the role-playing activity to assess their understanding and engagement.
• Evaluate the DIY National Park activity sheets for comprehension and creativity.

Homework/Extension

• Ask students to interview a family member about any personal experiences with National Parks and to bring a brief summary or drawing of this discussion to the next class.
