Overview

This lesson is designed for Year 8 students and is part 3 of 6 in the unit Exploring People and Communities. Through the examination of visual prompts and images showing Kingsthorpe’s local landmarks, services, and community spaces, students will develop a deeper understanding of their local area. Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

Welcome and brief recap of previous lessons about communities and places.
Short class discussion: What makes a place a community? What kind of places do we expect to find in our local community?
Clearly state the lesson aim: "Today, we are going to explore the Kingsthorpe community through images and maps to discover what it’s like to live here."

2. Visual Exploration (15 minutes)

Quick quiz-style assessment with verbal or written questions, e.g.:

Ask students to write a short ‘exit slip’ on one new thing they learned about Kingsthorpe and one question they still have.
