Overview
A 60-minute, student-centred introduction to nouns designed for Year 4 pupils, aligned with the National Curriculum for England (English – KS2: Years 3 & 4). This plan uses the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) to develop deep understanding of nouns through hands-on and collaborative activities.
National Curriculum Links
- Subject: English – Writing & Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation
- Key Stage: KS2 (Years 3 & 4)
- Primary Learning Objective:
Pupils should be taught to extend the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions, and to use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify. They should also learn the grammatical difference between plural and singular, including the use of suffixes to form plurals.
- Specific Reference:
- Develop their understanding of nouns and noun phrases (NC Programme of Study: English, Year 4)
- Use grammatical terminology accurately including noun, noun phrase
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Define what a noun is and identify nouns in spoken and written language
- Categorise nouns into common, proper, concrete, and abstract nouns
- Use nouns correctly within sentences and create expanded noun phrases independently
- Apply noun knowledge through interactive and reflective activities
Resources
- Whiteboard and markers
- Noun object cards (with pictures and words)
- Blank noun mats (tables with categories: common, proper, concrete, abstract)
- Mini whiteboards and pens for students
- Post-it notes
- Printed story extracts containing rich noun usage
- A soft ball or “talking token” for circle activities
Timing and Activities
1. Engage (10 mins)
Activity: Noun Brainstorm & "Noun Ball"
- Begin with an upbeat introduction: “Today, we're word detectives searching for nouns!”
- Teacher throws a soft ball to a pupil. When caught, the pupil says a noun (person, place, thing, or idea). The ball is tossed around for different pupils to share nouns aloud.
- Teacher writes nouns on the board while highlighting diversity (e.g., dog, London, happiness).
- Whole-class discussion to define “noun” in simple terms: A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Purpose: Hook pupils’ curiosity and activate prior knowledge.
2. Explore (15 mins)
Activity: Noun Sorting Carousel
- Set up four stations labelled: Common Nouns, Proper Nouns, Concrete Nouns, Abstract Nouns.
- Pupils work in small groups (4 groups of 7 pupils) visiting each station with noun cards to sort into categories on noun mats. e.g., ‘apple’ goes under concrete/common; ‘London’ under proper; ‘freedom’ under abstract.
- Groups discuss reasoning before placing cards, encouraging collaborative learning.
- Teacher circulates, probing with questions: “Is this a person, place, or thing?” “Is this a name of a specific person or place?”
Purpose: Hands-on categorisation builds conceptual understanding through discovery.
3. Explain (10 mins)
Activity: Interactive Whiteboard Lesson
- Teacher summarises noun types with definition and examples:
- Common nouns: general names (city, cat)
- Proper nouns: specific names (Paris, Mrs Smith) – Always start with a capital letter
- Concrete nouns: things you can see or touch (book, river)
- Abstract nouns: ideas or feelings (joy, boredom)
- Use sentence examples illustrating nouns in context (e.g., The excited dog ran in London.)
- Show how nouns form expanded noun phrases by adding adjectives: The excited dog → The excited, fluffy dog
- Elicit examples from pupils and write them on the board.
Purpose: Consolidation of conceptual understanding with teacher guidance.
4. Elaborate (15 mins)
Activity: Noun Phrase Creation & Story Building
- Pupils receive a short printed story extract with underlined simple nouns.
- In pairs, pupils create expanded noun phrases by adding adjectives or determiners (e.g., “the dog” → “the noisy, big dog”).
- Each pair writes 3 improved sentences on mini whiteboards.
- Volunteers share their sentences with the class.
- As a class, collaboratively construct a short story on the whiteboard focusing on using varied nouns and noun phrases.
- Pupils contribute one noun phrase each, encouraging creativity and application.
Purpose: Deepened application and creativity using nouns and noun phrases in context.
5. Evaluate (10 mins)
Activity: Noun Detective Quiz & Reflection
- Pupils individually write down:
- A definition of a noun in their own words
- One example each of a common, proper, concrete, and abstract noun
- Quick quiz: Teacher reads sentences aloud and pupils identify and write down all the nouns they can find.
- Reflection: Pupils place a post-it on a learning wall rating from “I’m a noun expert!” to “I want to learn more about nouns.”
- Teacher reviews answers to assess understanding and misconceptions.
Purpose: Assess learning, promote self-reflection, and inform next steps.
Differentiation
- Support: Provide noun cards with images for less confident pupils; allow sentence building with scaffolded sentence starters.
- Challenge: Ask higher ability pupils to include compound nouns and suggest how nouns can be made plural and possessive.
- Use peer support in paired/group activities to facilitate inclusion.
Assessment Opportunities
- Observation during sorting and group discussions (formative).
- Sentence writing and noun phrase creation (formative).
- Quiz and reflection responses (summative for the lesson).
Extension Ideas
- Create a “noun hunt” homework where pupils find and classify nouns in books or around their home.
- Introduce noun suffixes (e.g., -ness, -ment) and how abstract nouns are formed for future lessons.
This 5E lesson plan embodies an active, student-centred approach, enabling Year 4 pupils to not only understand the concept of nouns but also apply their learning creatively, aligned tightly with the English National Curriculum requirements.
