Lesson Breakdown

Starter Activity (10 minutes) – The Mystery Box Challenge

  1. Engagement Hook: Show students a closed "Mystery Box." Explain that hidden inside are some objects that represent different parts of the Earth.
  2. Allow students to take turns feeling inside (without looking) and describe what they feel.
  3. Write their descriptions on the board. Example responses might include “hard like rock,” “soft like clay,” or “smooth and heavy like metal.”
  4. Discussion: Ask the class—What do you think these objects represent? What might be beneath our feet?

Main Teaching Input (15 minutes) – Layers of the Earth Explanation

  1. Introduce the Four Layers using a labelled image or visual aid:

    • Crust: The outermost layer where we live – thin and made of rock.
    • Mantle: The thickest layer made of semi-molten rock (magma).
    • Outer Core: Liquid iron and nickel, responsible for Earth’s magnetic field.
    • Inner Core: A solid iron and nickel centre, extremely hot!
  2. Demonstration with Split Ball Model: Show students the cut-open Styrofoam or rubber ball—using colours to discuss different layers.

  3. Link to Real World: Discuss natural events like Earthquakes and Volcanoes and how they relate to the Earth's layers.


Hands-On Activity (15 minutes) – Playdough Planet

  1. Distribute playdough (4 colours) to small groups. Assign one layer to each colour.
  2. Guide students through making a model Earth by layering dough:
    • Start with a small ball (inner core).
    • Add a slightly larger layer around it (outer core).
    • Add a thicker layer next (mantle).
    • Finish with a thin outer crust.
  3. Once the models are made, carefully cut them in half to reveal the layers inside.

Plenary (10 minutes) – Quiz & Reflection
