Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will:
- Identify and describe the interrelationships between organisms in different ecosystems. (NC Biology, KS3, Programme of Study – Living things and their habitats)
- Explain how energy flows and how materials cycle within ecosystems using examples. (NC Biology KS3)
- Evaluate the impact of human activity on ecosystems and suggest measures to reduce negative effects. (NC Science KS3)
- Demonstrate understanding through creative presentation that summarises key learning from the unit.

Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
“Ecosystem Quick-Fire Quiz”
- Using mini quiz sheets with 10 challenging questions based on the unit content (e.g., producers vs consumers, food webs, human impact)
- Students answer individually, then quickly discuss in pairs to consolidate answer thinking
- Group feedback with explanation on common misconceptions
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and gauge overall retention before deeper reflection.
2. Recap Video & Discussion (10 minutes)
- Show a short teacher-narrated video summarising ecosystems, their interactions, energy transfer, and human impact.
- Follow up with a guided Q&A to check understanding, emphasising vocabulary and concepts required by the National Curriculum.
Key questions:
- What is the role of producers, consumers, and decomposers?
- How do energy and nutrients flow through ecosystems?
- Give examples of human activities that harm or help ecosystems.
3. Group Activity – Ecosystem Explorer Gallery (20 minutes)
- Divide the class into 5 groups of 6. Assign each group one ecosystem from the unit (woodland, pond, grassland, marine, urban).
- Each group creates a creative summary poster for their ecosystem addressing:
- Key species & their roles (producer, consumer, decomposer)
- Food web diagram including energy flow arrows
- Human impacts & mitigation strategies
- Adaptations of certain species
- Encourage artistic elements, labelled diagrams, and concise explanations.
- At the end, each group presents their poster to the class (2-3 mins each).
Purpose: Synthesises conceptual knowledge and builds communication skills aligned with Working Scientifically goals.
4. Individual Reflection – “My Ecosystem Promise” (10 minutes)
- On sticky notes, students write one thing they’ve learned about ecosystems that surprised them, and one specific action they promise to do to help protect ecosystems locally or globally.
- Share some promises aloud; collect and display in classroom as a reminder of responsibility.
Purpose: Personal connection to the content, nurturing environmental stewardship as encouraged by national curriculum PSHE crossover.
5. Plenary & Formative Assessment (10 minutes)
- Return to the initial quick-fire quiz questions.
- Students self-assess their improvement on whiteboards using a traffic light system (green=I fully understand; amber=some gaps; red=need support).
- Teacher facilitates clarifications on amber/red topics.
- Set optional extension: research a local ecosystem or a current conservation project for homework.

- Formative assessment through quiz, group presentations, and reflection.
