Eruption Stages Sketch

Overview

Students will learn the key stages of a volcano eruption and show their understanding by drawing and writing a simple labelled sequence. This builds on the KS2 geography focus on physical geography, including volcanoes and earthquakes, by using a clear process model.

Learning intentions

• Students will describe key stages of a volcano eruption in order.
• Students will draw a volcano diagram for each stage.
• Students will write short captions to explain what is happening in each stage.

Success criteria

• I can list the eruption stages in the correct order.
• I can draw clear pictures for each stage (at least 3 stages).
• I can write a short sentence/caption for each drawing.
• I can use geography terms such as volcano, lava, ash, and eruption.

Lesson structure (1 minutes)

1. 0–10 min · Hook & model. Teacher shows a simple 3-step eruption sequence image (explosion/ash → lava flow → lava cooling) and says one sentence about each stage; students point to the stage they think comes next.
2. 10–25 min · Direct teaching (language + order). Teacher writes the stages on the board as a numbered sequence and introduces/recaps key words: volcano, ash, lava, eruption, cooling; students repeat chorally and discuss the order with a quick partner check.
3. 25–45 min · Quick sketch task. Teacher hands out an A4 worksheet with three blank panels; students draw a simple volcano diagram in each panel, using arrows to show direction of lava and adding small details (smoke/ash above, lava flowing down).
4. 45–55 min · Write captions. Students write one short caption per panel using a stem: “First…”, “Next…”, “Finally…”. Teacher circulates and prompts for correct order and clear meaning.
5. 55–60 min · Share & check (exit quick scan). Students hold up their diagram; teacher does a 1-minute gallery walk (or table check) counting how many have correct order and at least one correct term.

• Coloured pencils or crayons (optional)
• Board/projector image showing eruption stages (no need for video)
• Markers/chalk for modelling stages and key words
• Student word bank (volcano, eruption, ash, lava, cooling)
• Quick display cards for numbered steps

Assessment

• Teacher checks during circulation: correct order, clear drawings, and at least one accurate term used in captions.
• “Hold up and scan” check at the end: students’ panels match the numbered sequence and captions are understandable.
• Record 2–3 common misconceptions to address next lesson (e.g., mixing ash and lava stages).

Differentiation

• Support: provide sentence starters (“First…”, “Next…”, “Finally…”) and a word bank; allow students to choose 3 stages only (minimum requirement).
• Support for SEND/EAL: offer a partially labelled example diagram for students to copy and then add their own caption.
• Extension: add a fourth panel (more ash/explosion, or the eruption slowing) and include one extra sentence explaining cause/effect using simple words (e.g., “The pressure builds.”).
• Challenge: ask students to include arrows showing lava direction and to underline one key geography word in their captions.
