Everyday Materials: Pupils should identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper, and cardboard for particular uses.
This hands-on and exploratory lesson is designed to encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and collaborative learning in an interactive and structured environment. Students will examine the materials used to build homes and buildings and discuss why certain materials are chosen for specific purposes.
Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Name a variety of materials commonly used in building (wood, brick, concrete, glass, etc.) and describe their properties (e.g., strong, hard, flexible).
- Recognise why different materials are chosen for specific parts of a house (e.g., roof, walls, windows).
- Begin to make connections between materials in their own homes and their suitability for purpose.
Resources & Materials Needed
- A "mystery bag" containing examples of building materials: wood offcuts, small metal objects, a brick piece, transparent plastic/acrylic, cardboard, etc.
- Photographs of homes and buildings from around the world.
- Chart paper or whiteboard and markers for group work.
- Labels for materials (laminated for reuse).
- A printed scavenger hunt sheet with materials for students to identify at home after the lesson.
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction and Hook (10 minutes)
Objective: Spark curiosity and engage students by introducing the topic.
- Mystery Bag Game
- Bring out the mystery bag and tell students it contains items related to today's lesson. One at a time, invite selected students to reach into the bag (without looking) and feel an item.
- Ask them to describe what they feel (e.g. rough, heavy, shiny) and guess what the material might be.
- Reveal each item and display it at the front of the class. Use this as a springboard to discuss briefly:
“Today, we’ll learn about these materials and why they’re important for building our homes and schools!”
- Show students a photograph of a building that uses many materials (e.g. a house with brick walls, glass windows, roof tiles, and a wooden door). Ask:
- How do you think this house stays up without falling down?
- What do you notice about the different materials?

2. Main Lesson (30 minutes)
A. Guided Discussion (10 minutes)

Properties of Building Materials
- Present each mystery bag material to the class and, as a group, discuss its main properties. For example:
- Wood: strong, can be shaped, used for doors and furniture.
- Glass: smooth, transparent, used for windows.
- Brick: strong, durable, rough texture, used for walls.
- Metal: hard, shiny, used for pipes and tools.
- Plastic: waterproof, often light, used for pipes and furniture.
- Use visual aids or props to show where each material is used in a building and reinforce their properties.

What Makes a Good Material?
- Lead a group discussion on why builders choose specific materials for houses. Use simple prompts like:
Why don’t we use glass for walls? Do you think a wooden roof would keep out the rain?
- Encourage students to think critically about the function of materials.
B. Group Activity: Material Match (20 minutes)
Organise the class into five groups (5 students per group) for this hands-on activity:

Set Up
- Create five stations around the classroom, each with a mini "house feature" (e.g., a cardboard drawn outline of a roof, wall, door, window, and floor). Provide pre-labelled material cut-outs (wood, glass, brick, etc.) at each station.

Task
- Students must examine the materials at their station, discuss as a group, and decide which material would be the most suitable for the feature. For example:
- Roof → Tile (durable, waterproof)
- Wall → Brick (strong, sturdy)
- Window → Glass (transparent)

Wrap-Up
- Groups briefly present their choices and explain their reasoning. Encourage students to use key vocabulary in their explanations.
3. Consolidation and Homework Task (10 minutes)
Scavenger Hunt Reflection (In-Class Discussion - 5 minutes):
- Hand out a scavenger hunt sheet that includes illustrations of common materials (e.g. glass, wood, brick, etc.). Ask students to find as many of these materials as they can in their homes and tick them on the sheet as homework.
- Explain that during the next lesson, they will share what they found and compare their discoveries with classmates.
Plenary (5 minutes):
- Sit students in a circle and throw a lightweight ball to students randomly to quiz them, using questions like:
- Name one material we talked about today!
- What material is good for making windows? Why?
- Can you name something in your house that is made from wood?
Finish the lesson with a sense of achievement by briefly summarising:
“Today, you’ve started thinking like real builders and scientists! You now know why buildings need different materials to stay strong, safe, and dry.”
Assessment Opportunities
- Observe students’ participation in the mystery bag activity and their ability to describe materials clearly.
- Assess group activity participation and reasoning during the Material Match task.
- Gauge understanding during the plenary quiz and through students’ explanations.
Homework Task
Scavenger Hunt Sheet: Students to find examples of listed materials (wood, glass, brick, etc.) in their own homes, tick them off the sheet, and bring it back to discuss in Lesson 3.
Differentiation
- Less Confident Learners: Pair with more confident peers during group tasks and provide additional prompts or guided questions to support contributions.
- High Achievers: Challenge them to think critically about new materials not covered in the lesson (e.g., metal or plastic alternatives) and to explain what they could be used for in homes.
- Visual Learners: Provide vivid photographs of materials and buildings to accompany discussions.

To evaluate this lesson, consider:
