Lesson Overview

In this introductory lesson of the "Descriptive Writing Adventure" unit, students will learn to identify and use similes to create vivid imagery in their writing. They will also explore expanded noun phrases to add precision, interest, and depth to their descriptions. Lesson Structure

1. Starter (10 minutes)

Oral Warm-up: Begin with a fun “Simile Detective” game. Teacher reads vivid descriptive sentences aloud, some containing similes, others without. Students raise thumbs up if they hear a simile and explain why it is a simile.
Definition and Purpose: Teacher introduces the formal definition of a simile ("A simile compares two different things using the words 'like' or 'as'") and discusses how similes help readers imagine things more clearly or creatively.

2. Teaching Input (15 minutes)

Introduction to Expanded Noun Phrases: Teacher explains what expanded noun phrases are (a noun plus adjectives or other modifiers, e.g. “the shimmering, silver moon”). Show examples on the board and discuss how they add more detail.
Modeling: Use a simple noun (e.g., "tree") and transform it step-by-step into an expanded noun phrase: "the tall tree," "the tall, twisting tree," "the tall, twisting tree with golden leaves."
Interactive Reading: Provide children with a short descriptive paragraph containing similes and expanded noun phrases. Read it together and highlight examples of each.

3. Group Activity (20 minutes)

Creating a Simile Poster: Divide students into two groups. Each group is given poster paper and markers. They brainstorm and write as many similes as possible related to a theme (e.g., nature, animals, weather). Encourage them to think creatively ("The cat’s fur is as soft as cotton wool").
