Exploring the Mysterious Hat

Overview

In this first lesson of a 3-lesson unit, pupils revisit ideas about “the man in the hat” and use discussion, partner talk and quick retrieval to generate descriptive adventure language. They focus on understanding what an image suggests and predicting feelings and motives, setting up later lessons where they will craft and refine descriptive writing.

Learning intentions

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Hook: image entry

• Teacher displays the “mysterious hat” image and asks: “What words come to mind when you see this image?”
• Students write 3 descriptive words or phrases silently.

2. 5–15 min · Vocabulary building

• Teacher introduces and discusses descriptive vocabulary related to mood and character.
• Students match words to parts of the image and use them in sentences.

3. 15–30 min · Writing activity

• Students plan a descriptive paragraph about the man in the hat using a graphic organizer.
• Teacher models writing a paragraph focusing on vivid description and mood.
• Students write their own paragraphs independently.

4. 30–40 min · Peer review and revision

• Students exchange paragraphs with a partner.
• Using a checklist, they give feedback on vocabulary use, clarity, and mood.
• Students revise their paragraphs accordingly.

5. 40–45 min · Sharing and exit ticket

• Volunteers share their descriptive sentences.
• Exit ticket: Write one sentence describing the man’s mood using a new vocabulary word learned today.

• Inference and prediction sentence stems on a slide/board
• Notepads or exercise books for quick writing
• Timer (visible)
• Board/tablet for whole-class evidence ladder
• Exit ticket slips or last page of books for teacher marking

Assessment

• Observe students' use of descriptive vocabulary during writing and discussion (formative)
• Review students' written paragraphs for use of vivid language and clear organisation
• Check exit tickets for correct use of new vocabulary and descriptive detail

Differentiation

• Support: provide stem sentences and a word bank (tense, cautious, curious, uncertain, watchful, ominous, whisper, shadow, creak, dim light) and a “choose your evidence” checklist (posture, eyes, hat details, lighting, setting)
• Support: sentence frames for EAL/SEN: “I think he might be ___ because I can see ___.”
• Challenge/extension: ask pupils to include an additional inference about a possible motive and link it to the prediction (“If he wants ___, then he might ___”)
• For pupils needing structure: limit to 2 pieces of evidence per claim and 1 prediction sentence only
