Overview

This 50-minute lesson for Primary 6 students supports their second level Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) journey in Modern Foreign Languages (French). It uses a Storyline approach to introduce and practice vocabulary and structures related to family members and pets. The lesson integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while fostering cultural awareness and personal engagement.

Lesson Breakdown

1. Starter / Engagement (8 minutes)

• Begin by showing flashcards representing family members and pets.
• Quick oral drill: Teacher says the word, pupils repeat chorally and individually, focusing on pronunciation and gender articles.
• Play a ‘Guess Who?’ game using the flashcards: "C’est mon frère?" Pupils raise hands or point to make connections with the words.

2. Introduction to Storyline (10 minutes)

• Introduce the storyline: “La famille et leurs animaux” – a French family and their pets, with an illustrated storyboard shown on board.
• Teacher narrates the story, supported by the audio recording, pausing for explanations and simple translation of key phrases.
• Ask a few comprehension questions in English and simple French to check understanding. Example: “Combien de frères a la fille?” / “Quel animal a le garçon?”

3. Interactive Story-Based Activity (15 minutes)

• Pupils are grouped in 5 groups of 6. Each group receives part of the storyboard to rehearse and act out in French using key vocabulary and simple sentences.
• Encourage use of physical gestures to support language meaning.
• Provide sentence starters on worksheets:
  • “Voici mon père, il s’appelle...”
  • “Ma soeur a un chien.”
• Groups present their part of the story sequentially to the class, practising intonation and clarity.

4. Consolidation and Writing Task (12 minutes)

• Pupils individually complete a worksheet: write 3 simple sentences about their own family or pets in French, using the model sentences.

5. Plenary and Assessment (5 minutes)

• Quick oral round: each pupil says one sentence about family or pets from their writing to the class.
