National Curriculum Links
This lesson supports the following aims and programme of study in English (Spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation):
These links fall within the statutory objectives for Year 4 as set out in the National Curriculum for England (2014).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, all pupils will be able to:
- Accurately spell a selected set of Christmas-themed vocabulary from the Year 3/4 statutory list and common festive words (e.g., “reindeer,” “sleigh,” “carol”).
- Demonstrate the application of spelling rules and patterns learned previously through competitive and collaborative activities.
- Use teamwork effectively to support each other’s spelling development in a fun and motivating context.
Success Criteria
- Spell a minimum of 15 festive vocabulary words correctly during games.
- Apply spelling strategies such as sounding out, identifying syllables, and recognising common suffixes/prefixes.
- Participate actively and respectfully during all team activities, supporting peers.
Resources
- Whiteboard and pens
- Individual mini whiteboards and markers for each pupil
- Pre-prepared word cards (Christmas-themed, varying difficulty)
- Word search sheets (festive vocabulary) — 1 per pupil
- Stopwatch or timer
- Scoreboard/chart to track team points
- Small rewards (stickers, pencils) for motivation
Timings and Activities
1. Introduction & Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Recap the previous lessons on festive vocabulary and spelling rules.
- Quick whole-class oral spelling quiz: Teacher says a festive word; pupils write it on their mini whiteboards and hold it up for quick assessment (e.g., “stocking,” “elf,” “mistletoe”).
- Highlight any common errors, reinforcing correct spelling strategies.
2. Spelling Bee Extravaganza (15 minutes)
- Organise pupils into 3 teams of 6.
- Explain the spelling bee rules: Teacher says the word, pupils take turns spelling aloud. If a pupil misspells, the turn passes to the next player.
- Use progressive difficulty starting from simpler spellings to more challenging ones (including homophones like “whole” vs “hole,” and festive words).
- Award 1 point per correctly spelled word. Keep running scores visible on the board to foster competitive spirit.
- Encourage positive peer support, e.g., team coaches.
National Curriculum Focus: Spelling words correctly and strategies to self-check.
3. Festive Word Search Challenge (10 minutes)
- Hand out Christmas-themed word search sheets containing vocabulary from the Year 3/4 list plus unit-specific terms.
- Pupils work individually but can quietly ask teammates for spelling tips if stuck.
- Time-limited: Challenge pupils to find and circle as many words as possible in 10 minutes.
- When finished, quickly review some trickiest spellings aloud.
National Curriculum Focus: Reinforcing spelling in context and word recognition strategies.
4. Festive Spelling Relay (20 minutes)
- Teams reconvene with a relay setup: Each pupil runs/spins/walks to a designated spot to collect a word card, returns to their team to spell the word correctly on their mini whiteboard.
- If the spelling is correct, the next teammate takes their turn; if incorrect, that pupil must try again until correct before passing on.
- Words progress in difficulty, alternating between suffixes/prefixes and homophones to challenge students’ application of spelling rules.
- First team to finish all their words correctly wins the relay.
- Teacher monitors and notes individual support needs during the relay for future planning.
National Curriculum Focus: Applying spelling patterns, collaborative learning, resilience in correcting mistakes.
5. Plenary & Self-Assessment (5 minutes)
- Gather pupils back in a circle. Reflect on what spelling strategies helped them most during the games.
- Ask pupils to write down one word they’ve learnt to spell confidently today on a sticky note and share it aloud.
- Quick “Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down” rating: Did the games help improve your spelling? Did you enjoy working with your teams?
- Praise effort and good sportsmanship. Award small rewards for enthusiasm, teamwork, or spelling improvement.
Assessment
- Observation during activities: Teacher notes pupils’ spelling accuracy, use of strategies, and engagement.
- Informal assessment via mini whiteboard work and word search completion.
- Verbal feedback during plenary about spelling progress and group collaboration.
- Post-lesson: Collect sticky notes for review of individual word mastery.
Differentiation
- Support:
- Provide additional hints or allow peer support for pupils struggling with spellings.
- Use word banks for teams needing extra guidance in the relay.
- Challenge:
- Include harder words with complex suffixes/prefixes for more confident spellers.
- Encourage partial challenging rounds without time pressure to promote mastery.
Extensions & Homework Suggestion
- Invite pupils to write 3-5 festive sentences at home using the learnt words.
- Create a ‘Festive Spelling Booklet’ compiling the games’ words and new vocabulary, encouraging further practice over the holidays.
Notes for Teachers
- Keep energy high and encourage a positive attitude to mistakes; frame errors as learning steps.
- Use festive music softly in the background during word searches or quiet reflection to add atmosphere.
- Rotate team positions to ensure all pupils have equitable turns leading or supporting.
Use this lesson to light up spelling skills while celebrating the festive season with joy and collaboration!
