Overview
This 120-minute lesson is designed for Year 9 students studying textiles within the National Curriculum for England’s Design and Technology (D&T) programme. Lesson Breakdown
Starter / Do Now Task (10 minutes)
Focus: Weaving & Knitting – Structure & Function
- Students will watch or observe a short animation/video showing the difference between weaving and knitting structures.
- Task: On a worksheet, label the diagrams of woven and knitted fabrics, and write 1 sentence explaining one key difference.
TA support: For students requiring assistance, the TA will provide simplified diagrams and one-to-one support summarising key points and helping structure their sentence.
Main Activities
Independent Task 1: Fibre Research (20 minutes)
Objective: Understand characteristics of Natural and Man-made fibres.
- Students work in pairs to research definitions and properties of:
- Natural fibres (e.g., cotton, wool, silk)
- Man-made fibres (e.g., polyester, nylon, acrylic)
- Using provided tablets/computers, record at least three properties per fibre type and typical uses in textiles.
- Present findings as a quick two-minute oral summary to a peer in the class.
Differentiation:
- Low-level students use a scaffolded worksheet with bullet points and pre-filled options to match fibres and properties. The TA will assist.
Independent Task 2: Modern & Smart Fabrics Exploration (20 minutes)
Objective: Investigate modern/manufactured textiles and smart textile technology.
- Individually, students explore fabrics such as Gore-Tex, phase-change fabrics, conductive textiles, or light-responsive materials.
- Using fabric samples and info sheets, students fill in a chart: Fabric name, function, special properties, and potential applications.
- Challenge task option: Research a cutting-edge smart fabric innovation not presented in class and prepare a quick explanation.
TA support: Provide simplified fact sheets and assist students who struggle to summarise information.
Independent Task 3: Fabric Evaluation & Application (20 minutes)
Objective: Analyse and evaluate fibres/fabrics for practical use.
- Students are given a context (e.g., designing sportswear, school uniforms, outdoor clothes).
- Task: Select the best fibre/fabric types, justify choices based on fabric properties (e.g., breathability, stretch, insulation).
- Present selections with reasoning in small groups, encouraging peer feedback.
Challenge task: Include at least one smart fabric in their selection and explain how it meets the design brief.
Plenary (10 minutes)
- Class discussion to recap key learning points.
- Exit quiz: rapid-fire Q&A about fibre types, fabric properties, and smart textiles.
- Students complete a self-assessment on what they learnt and what they found challenging.
TA role: Support low-level learners to articulate one key learning point and one question/resource they want more help with.
