This 50-minute lesson is designed for a small class of 4 Year 1 pupils as part of the "Seasons and Living Things" unit. It focuses on identifying and understanding the basic structure of flowering plants through hands-on exploration and descriptive language. Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and introduce vocabulary.
- Begin by showing the large laminated diagram of a flowering plant.
- Ask pupils to name any plants or flowers they know. Write their ideas on the board to celebrate vocabulary.
- Introduce the key parts of the plant using clear, simple language: roots, stem, leaves, flower, petals, sepal, stamen, pistil.
- Show label cards and repeat the words chorally, emphasising correct pronunciation.

2. Main Activity – Flower Dissection and Exploration (25 minutes)
Objective: Pupils explore and identify the flower parts, linking structure to function.
- Distribute real flowers, hand lenses, and label cards to each pupil or pair.
- Model how to gently dissect the flower: separate petals, find the sepals, observe the stem and leaves, look for stamens and pistils inside the flower carefully.
- Pupils handle flowers, observe each part closely using the hand lens, then match label cards to parts of their flower.
- Encourage pupils to describe what they see and infer what each part does (e.g., “The petals are bright to attract bees”, “The roots drink water from the soil”).
- Circulate and support scientific vocabulary use, asking probing questions: “What do you think this part does? Why?”
WOW element: Provide a “scientist’s notebook” sheet where pupils draw and colour the parts they observed and write or dictate one sentence describing what each part does.
3. Plenary – Sharing and Review (10 minutes)
Objective: Consolidate learning through verbal reflection and assessment.

- Use open questions to elicit links between parts and seasons where relevant (e.g., “How might the flower change in autumn?”).
- Recap the song/rhyme to reinforce vocabulary.
