Fun Welsh Speaking Game

Curriculum Area and Level

Curriculum: Curriculum for Wales
Area of Learning and Experience: Languages, Literacy and Communication
Progression Step: 2 (Ages 5-7)
Skill Focus: Oracy – Developing confidence in speaking Welsh through play

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this 15-minute session, pupils will be able to:

  • Practise speaking simple Welsh phrases with confidence.
  • Listen and respond appropriately to a peer using Welsh.
  • Develop a positive attitude towards speaking Welsh in a fun and engaging way.

Resources Needed

  • A soft ball or beanbag
  • Flashcards with simple Welsh phrases and vocabulary
  • A small bell or sound-maker (optional)

Lesson Structure (15 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up (3 Minutes) – Call and Response

  • Teacher says a simple question in Welsh (e.g. Sut wyt ti? – How are you?) and throws a soft ball to a pupil.
  • Pupil catches the ball and responds in Welsh (e.g. Dw i’n hapus! – I am happy!).
  • Pupil then throws the ball to another pupil and asks the same question.
  • Continue for a few rounds, ensuring all pupils participate.

Differentiation Strategy: Model pronunciation as needed and allow shy pupils to listen before participating.

2. Main Activity (8 Minutes) – ‘Secret Welsh Speaker’ Game

  • One pupil is chosen as the ‘Secret Welsh Speaker’ and wears a small badge or sticker.
  • Teacher holds up a flashcard with a Welsh phrase (e.g. Ble wyt ti’n byw? – Where do you live?).
  • Pupils take turns asking the given question to different classmates.
  • The ‘Secret Welsh Speaker’ must answer in a special way (e.g. by whispering their response).
  • The rest of the class must listen carefully and try to guess who the ‘Secret Welsh Speaker’ is.
  • Once guessed, a new ‘Secret Welsh Speaker’ is chosen, and the game continues with a new question.

Challenge: Introduce more complex phrases for confident speakers (e.g. Beth wyt ti’n hoffi? – What do you like?).

3. Plenary (4 Minutes) – ‘Bell Bingo’

  • Teacher calls out different Welsh words or phrases used during the lesson.
  • Pupils must repeat each phrase aloud.
  • If they hear a phrase they used during the lesson, they raise their hand and the teacher rings a small bell for them as a reward.
  • End with a group cheer in Welsh (Da iawn, pawb! – Well done, everyone!).

Assessment Opportunities

  • Observe pupils’ participation and engagement in speaking Welsh.
  • Encourage reluctant speakers with peer support.
  • Use thumbs-up/down to gauge pupil confidence in using the key phrases.

Teacher Reflection

  • Were all pupils engaged in the activities?
  • Did any pupils require extra support with pronunciation?
  • How can this activity be adapted for future lessons?

This highly interactive session fosters confidence in speaking Welsh in a fun and inclusive environment, aligning with the Curriculum for Wales goals of developing oracy skills through play.
