Learning Objectives

  2. Use phonics knowledge and common exception words to spell with growing accuracy. (Year 1 & 2)
  3. Expand sentences with descriptive vocabulary (Year 2).
  4. Demonstrate clear, legible handwriting for letters and simple words. (Year 1 & 2)
  5. Work collaboratively and independently to produce a short piece of writing. (Cross-curricular: Speaking and Listening)

Resources

  • Whiteboard and marker
  • Visual aids: Picture cards of animals, action verbs, adjectives
  • Phonics sound mats and common exception word lists (differentiated sets)
  • Lined exercise books or lined paper
  • Pencil grips for those who need fine motor support

Lesson Structure

1. Engage (5 minutes)

  • Welcome class and show a vibrant, colourful picture of a friendly animal (e.g., a cat wearing a hat).
  • Ask: “What do you see? Can you tell me some words to describe it?” (Elicit adjectives, nouns, and verbs.)
  • Write children’s ideas on the board using correct capital letters and spaces.

Purpose: Activate vocabulary, stimulate imagination, and engage pupils in speaking confidently (speaking and listening National Curriculum goals).

2. Modelled Writing (10 minutes)

  • Teacher models writing 2 sentences about the picture on whiteboard, e.g., “The cat is big and fluffy. It wears a red hat.”
  • Verbalise the thought process loudly:
    • Choosing simple words,
    • Starting sentences with a capital letter,
    • Using spaces between words,
    • Ending with a full stop.
  • Introduce adjectives to expand sentences (Year 2 focus).
  • Point out common exception words or tricky phonemes and spell them aloud.

3. Guided Writing (10 minutes)

  • Pupils sort into three differentiated groups with teaching assistants or support:

    • Group A (Lower ability/Year 1): Write 1-2 simple sentences using phonics mats and set of 5 common exception words.
    • Group B (Middle ability): Write 2-3 sentences including one adjective and conjunction ‘and’. Use word mats.
    • Group C (Higher ability/Year 2): Write 3-4 sentences with adjectives, conjunctions (and, but), and correct punctuation (including question or exclamation marks if appropriate).
  • Teacher and teaching assistants circulate, supporting spelling, sentence structure, and handwriting.

4. Independent Writing Challenge (10 minutes)

  • Pupils pick a new animal picture card from a tray.
  • Write 2-4 sentences to describe their chosen animal, using the skills practised.
  • Encourage use of capital letters, full stops, and adjectives.

5. Plenary & Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Select 4-5 pupils representing different groups to read aloud their sentences.
  • Provide positive, specific feedback on punctuation, vocabulary, and handwriting.
  • Quick thumbs up/down quiz: “Did everyone remember a capital letter at the start?”
  • Mark exercise books briefly for formative assessment focusing on sentence construction, spelling accuracy, and punctuation.

Differentiation Strategies

  • Visual supports (picture cards, word mats) for all pupils.
  • Phonics support and spelling lists tailored to individual needs.
  • Additional adult support for emerging writers.
  • Extension tasks for higher ability: Add a question or exclamation sentence; underline adjectives.
  • Pencil grips and seating arrangements to aid handwriting.

Assessment Opportunities

  • Continuous formative assessment during guided and independent writing.
  • Observation checklist recording: use of capital letters, punctuation, sentence length, vocabulary variety.
  • Collection of written work to assess individual progress in transcription and composition against Year 1 and 2 objectives.

Cross-Curricular Links

  • Speaking and Listening: Sharing ideas about animals, listening to peers’ sentences.
  • Art: Encourage drawing of their animal after writing to consolidate learning and enhance motivation (optional extension).

Reflection Notes and Next Steps

  • Identify pupils needing more phonics/spelling support for future phonics group work.
  • Plan a follow-up lesson focussing on using different sentence openers or question sentences to develop variety and fluency further.
  • Incorporate digital storytelling tools next lesson to enhance engagement and modern literacy skills.

This lesson plan offers a well-structured, evidence-based approach to teaching writing with clear differentiation. It aligns directly with the National Curriculum requirements for Years 1 and 2 and provides exciting, creative learning opportunities that develop confident young writers.
