Lesson Outline (25 minutes)

1. Introduction & Engage (5 minutes)

• Gather pupils on the carpet and introduce the concept: “Today we are going to make groups of objects to help us solve number problems.”
• Model with small teddy bears: Place 6 bears on the mat. Ask, “Can we make equal groups? How many groups can we make?”
• Demonstrate one grouping: “6 bears can be put into 2 groups of 3.” Count aloud together: 3, 6.
• Show groups clearly and use fingers/point to reinforce counting.

2. Modelled Examples with Grouping Mats (7 minutes)

• Present several different examples, starting very simple and building:

  • 4 counters → Can we make 2 groups? (2 + 2)

    • Act out and count each time with the children. Emphasise vocabulary “groups of” and “leftover”.

    • For pupils needing more support, use fewer objects and allow them to physically move the counters to create groups.

3. Active & Interactive Group Work (8 minutes)

• Split the class into small mixed-ability groups (3-4 pupils), each with a set of objects and a grouping mat.
• Present a simple challenge verbally or with picture cards, e.g., “Can you make 3 groups using 9 counters?” or “How many groups of 2 can you make with 8 blocks?”
