Overview

This 90-minute session is designed for NCFE CACHE Level 3 Health and Social Care Year 1 learners, focusing on consolidating Learning Outcomes 1 to 6 from the HSC CM3 unit. The lesson integrates interactive discussion, case study analysis, group activities, and formative assessment, to ensure comprehensive understanding and application of core principles related to person-centred care, safeguarding, communication, and professional development.

By the end of this lesson, learners will:

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

• Welcome & Recap: Briefly revisit previous learning topics to link with today’s objectives.
• Set learning goals: Share the six learning objectives on the whiteboard; explain their relevance to future career roles.
• Engagement: Ask learners to share any real-life examples or experiences related to care, safeguarding or communication to personalise learning.

Activity 1: Interactive Presentation & Discussion (20 minutes)

• Present a targeted slideshow covering:

  • Definition and key features of person-centred care and safeguarding
  • Core communication techniques (active listening, open questions, empathy)
  • Confidentiality best practices and legal implications (GDPR basics in care)
  • Importance of professional development and reflective practice
  • Roles within multidisciplinary teams

• Encourage class discussion around each slide, stimulating critical thinking by posing scenario-based questions.

Activity 2: Case Study Group Work (30 minutes)

• Divide learners into 5 groups, each assigned a unique case study encapsulating issues like safeguarding concerns, communication dilemmas, or confidentiality breaches.
• Groups to:

  2. Analyse the situation, highlighting risks and appropriate responses.

• Groups perform their role-plays or presentations to the class.

• Distribute a short quiz with multiple-choice and scenario-based questions covering all 6 learning outcomes.
• Conduct a rapid “show of hands” self-assessment where learners rate their confidence on a scale of 1-5 for each LO.
• Discuss answers collaboratively, reinforcing key points and addressing any confusion.

• Homework: Learners to write a reflective journal entry on how they would apply one or more learning outcomes in a real or hypothetical care situation, citing legislation or standards referenced in the lesson.
