Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Aim: Activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.
- Begin with a quick class discussion: “What do you think your pet (or a farm animal) eats every day? Is it the same as you?”
- Show images of four animals (e.g., lion, cow, dog, rabbit).
- Ask students in pairs to brainstorm what types of food each animal might eat and why.
- Quick share-out on answers to consolidate understanding: herbivores (plants), carnivores (meat), omnivores (both).

2. Main Activity 1: Understanding Balanced Diets (15 minutes)
Aim: Deepen understanding of balanced diets in humans and animals.
- Explain the term “balanced diet” with reference to the human food plate (vegetables, carbs, proteins, dairy).
- Compare the human plate with animal diets using example animals. Use visual aids to highlight protein sources, fibres, vitamins.
- Introduce key terms clearly: carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre.
- Whole class brainstorming: Why do you think eating the right amount of each is important?
Teacher note: Use clear, age-appropriate language and real-life examples to connect with students.
3. Main Activity 2: Food Chart Creation (25 minutes)
Aim: Hands-on application of knowledge through visual representation.
- Divide class into pairs (preferably mixed ability). Each pair receives an animal card.
- Task: Create a food chart showing the balanced diet of their assigned animal. Use magazines, flashcards, and drawing materials.
- Ensure they label their charts with key nutritional components and write simple explanations.
- Circulate to guide and ask probing questions: Why did you include these foods? How does this benefit the animal?
- Extension challenge for faster groups: Add a note about what might happen if the animal doesn’t get a balanced diet.
4. Plenary – Sharing & Reflecting (10 minutes)
Aim: Consolidate learning and encourage peer feedback.
- Each pair briefly presents their chart to the class.
- Encourage questions from classmates to promote discussion.
- Conclude with a summary of key points about the importance of nutrition and care in animals and humans.
- Pose a reflective question: How can knowing about diets help us care better for animals?
