1. Starter (10 minutes)

2. Main Activity (35 minutes)

Purpose: Hands-on group exploration and calculation of freshwater availability using role-play and quantitative reasoning.

Step 1: Group Setup (5 mins)
Divide the class into 6 groups of 5 students (total 30 students). Each group will work with individual materials.

Step 2: Role Cards Distribution (5 mins)

Step 3: Water Distribution Calculation (20 mins)

    • 20ml = glaciers/ice caps (set aside)
    • 10ml = freshwater (remaining)
    • From the 10ml, further divide: lakes, rivers, groundwater (highlighting that accessible freshwater is even smaller)
  • Complete calculations on printed worksheets and draw pie charts visualising these proportions.

Step 4: Group Discussion (10 mins)
Each role-representative voices their perspective on the importance of freshwater and challenges their sector faces due to limited availability.

  • Use question prompts, e.g., "How would a drought impact your sector?", "What strategies could help conserve water?"
  • Groups summarise solutions or concerns on post-it notes to share.

3. Plenary & Reflection (15 minutes)

Class Discussion

  • Groups share key findings and reflections on water scarcity implications.
  • Teacher introduces the concept of sustainable water management practices in the UK (e.g., rainwater harvesting, reducing pollution, water recycling).
  • Show a brief interactive map highlighting freshwater scarcity regions and water usage patterns in the UK and globally.
  • Exit Ticket: On a small slip, each student writes one new fact they learned and one question they still have about freshwater.
