Lesson Structure (60 minutes)
1. Introduction & Recap (10 minutes)
- Quick recap of Lesson 1 ("The Risks of Digital Threats"). Use a dyslexia-friendly PowerPoint with visuals and minimal text.
- Starter question on the board: Why do you think hackers target passwords the most?
- Brief whole-class discussion to activate prior knowledge.
- Introduce learning objectives (WALT) and success criteria clearly on the board.
Differentiation: Provide printed or digital key term glossary for students who may benefit. Also, offer a visual mind map summary.
2. Teacher Explanation & Modelling (10 minutes)
- Explain what makes a strong password (length, complexity, unpredictability). Model creating a strong password using a memorable phrase or random word combination.
- Demonstrate how antivirus software works: scanning, detecting, and removing threats.
- Introduce firewalls: explain them as “digital gatekeepers” that control incoming and outgoing traffic. Use simple analogies (e.g., firewall as a security guard filtering visitors).
- Use an interactive whiteboard or visual slide with infographics, key points highlighted in colour (helpful for dyslexic learners).
Extension: For advanced learners, briefly introduce concepts like multi-factor authentication or password managers.
3. Practical Activity: Applying Precautions (25 minutes)
Activity 1 – Password Creation Challenge (10 minutes)
- Each student creates 3 passwords based on different methods (e.g., passphrase, random characters, acronym).
- Use a password strength checker tool to test passwords.
- Group discussion: Why are some passwords stronger than others?
Activity 2 – Antivirus Software Demo (10 minutes)
- Students navigate a guided simulation or real antivirus software interface (set up by teacher in advance).
- Run a virus scan on a sample folder (can use safe, created files flagged as “threats” for the exercise).
- Discuss what actions the antivirus takes and why these matter.
Activity 3 – Firewall Scenario (5 minutes)
- Teacher presents a hypothetical scenario: a company needs to set up a firewall to protect against external attacks.
- Students discuss in pairs what rules the firewall might impose (e.g., blocking unknown IPs, allowing trusted services).
- Share answers briefly with the class.
Differentiation: Provide step-by-step printed instructions with visuals for students needing extra support. Allow verbal explanation instead of written for some tasks if preferred.
4. Plenary & Assessment (10 minutes)
- Quick quiz (verbal or written) on key points: password strength factors, antivirus function, firewall role.
- Students self-assess their confidence on success criteria using a traffic light system (red/orange/green).
- Teacher gives immediate verbal feedback and clarifies any misunderstandings.
Extension: Challenge advanced learners to suggest additional IT security measures (e.g., encryption, backups).
5. Homework / Extension Activity
- Research a recent example of a cyber attack related to weak passwords or virus infection. Prepare a short summary explaining how better precautions could have prevented it.
- Optional: Try setting up password manager software with parental supervision and bring feedback to next lesson.

- Emphasise everyday relevance (e.g., protecting social media accounts and personal devices).
- Reinforce that security is an ongoing practice, not a one-off task.
