Starter: Quickly research average salaries for different jobs and record some of these down. Students work out what that salary would be per month.

Main: Give students a scenario of a person, their living circumstances and the list of areas of monthly living they need to cover e.g. Food Petrol Electric bill Gas bill Council Tax Extras: MOT on the car and 2 new tyres on the car needed Football training each week for their son. (£12.50 a week) New pair of school shoes needed x 2
Pupils do the research necessary to look at areas around the country, related to the scenario cards to find out average costs of the key areas as stated above.
Teachers feel free to change this to other examples you prefer. Students use Excel spreadsheets to record the cost of the above for 1 month (4 weeks).
Plenary: Think about if you were in charge of the country. What changes could you make? What do you think should be cheaper or more expensive and why? Any ideas of how you may achieve this? Discuss as a group.
