Overview
This 60-minute lesson is the second in a four-lesson unit titled Mastering Numbers Together for Year 7 students aged 11-12. It is designed to deepen understanding of integer place value aligned with the National Curriculum for England (Mathematics — Key Stage 3). The lesson will allow students to identify and explain the value of digits within whole numbers up to at least 1,000,000, integrating hands-on and interactive activities to cater to diverse learning styles while promoting conceptual clarity.

Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge on number place value.
- Begin by displaying a 6-digit number on the board (e.g. 473,582).
- Ask students to write on their individual whiteboards the place value of the underlined digit (e.g. underline ‘7’).
- Invite 3-4 students to explain their answers aloud, using correct terminology such as “the 7 is in the ten-thousands place and represents 70,000.”
- Use questioning to review the positional difference between digits (e.g. difference between ‘7’ and ‘2’ in 473,582).
- Differentiation: Provide hints or smaller numbers for lower-attaining pupils.
2. Main Teaching Input (15 minutes)
Objective: Develop and consolidate understanding of integer place values up to 1,000,000.
- Use a large place value mat projected on the board to explicitly model the columns: units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands.
- Introduce base ten blocks physically:
- Ones = single cubes
- Tens = rods of 10 cubes
- Hundreds = flats (squares of 100 cubes)
- Thousands = large blocks (if available)
- Show how a number (e.g., 562,413) can be represented physically on the mat with the blocks.
- Build the number together as a class, counting the value of each digit using the blocks.
- Explicitly explain decomposing the number using place value:
562,413 = 500,000 + 60,000 + 2,000 + 400 + 10 + 3
- Encourage students to verbalise their understanding using place value vocabulary.
3. Hands-on Group Activity (15 minutes)
Objective: Apply understanding through tactile and collaborative tasks.
- Students work in groups of four with base ten blocks and place value mats.
- Each group is given 5 digit cards (random digits 0–9).
- Task: Create the largest and smallest numbers possible with the digits and physically build those numbers using blocks on the mats.
- Groups must present to the class explaining the value of each digit, justifying whether their number is largest or smallest.
- Teacher circulates to ask probing questions and provides immediate feedback.
- Differentiation: For higher-attaining students, extend the activity to 6-digit numbers and ask to explain hundreds of thousands place.
4. Interactive Game (10 minutes)
Objective: Reinforce learning via a motivating digital or board-based game.
- Use an interactive place value game on the board or via computer/tablet that challenges students to identify digit values in numbers quickly. Alternatively, a game where students move digits around to maximise or minimise the value of a number can be played.
- Students compete in pairs or small teams to earn points for accuracy and speed.
- Encourage reflection on mistakes and peer discussion.
5. Plenary and Assessment (10 minutes)
Objective: Summarise learning and assess understanding.
- Hand out short formative worksheets with 5 questions on integer place value, such as:
- Identify the place value of the underlined digit.
- Write the value of the digit in words.
- Decompose a number into expanded form.
- Collect responses to gauge individual understanding.
- Conclude with a quick oral quiz using “Think-Pair-Share”: pose a number and have students explain partner-to-partner the value of a random digit.
