By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Explain what Judaism is and identify its key beliefs.
  2. Understand the significance of key Jewish traditions and cultural practices.
  3. Discuss why these elements are important to Jewish people today.

Lesson Structure (45 Minutes)

Starter Activity (5 Minutes) – Jewish Artefact Mystery Box

  • Place objects (or printed images) of key Jewish artefacts in a mystery box:
    • Kippah (skullcap)
    • Menorah
    • Star of David
    • Torah Scroll
    • Challah Bread
    • Mezuzah
  • Pass the box around the group and allow students to feel or describe the objects without seeing them.
  • Ask, "What do you think these items have in common?" → Use responses to introduce Judaism as today’s topic.

Main Teaching (15 Minutes) – The Roots and Beliefs of Judaism

Section 1: What is Judaism? (5 minutes)

  • Present a simple timeline showing the origins of Judaism (Abraham, Moses, Torah, etc.).
  • Highlight Judaism as one of the oldest monotheistic religions.
  • Discuss the idea of God as one, ethical living, and the covenant.

Section 2: Jewish Symbols and Traditions (10 minutes)

Introduce and explain key symbols & practices in Judaism:

  1. The Star of David – Symbol of Jewish identity
  2. The Torah – Sacred text
  3. The Sabbath (Shabbat) – Day of rest and why it’s important
  4. The Synagogue – Jewish place of worship
  5. Kosher Food – What it means and why it matters

Use a short quiz format so that students match descriptions to images.

Paired Activity (10 Minutes) – 'Why Does This Matter?' Debate

  • Split students into pairs and assign each pair a Jewish tradition or symbol.
  • They should discuss and take notes on why this element of Jewish life is important.
  • Each pair presents their findings to the class for discussion.

Plenary (10 Minutes) – Reflection & Creative Task

Task: Create a Jewish Holiday Poster!

  • Each student selects a Jewish holiday (e.g., Hanukkah, Passover, Rosh Hashanah).
  • They draw and annotate a mini poster showing:
    • Name of the festival
    • Main traditions associated with it
    • Why it is significant to Jewish people
  • Present posters as a mini gallery walk at the end.

Assessment Opportunities

  • Listening to student responses during the discussion.
  • Evaluating their reasoning skills in the debate.
  • Reviewing their poster work for understanding of Jewish festivals.

Differentiation & Support

  • For students who need extra support: Provide sentence starters for discussions and a word bank with key terms.
  • For students who need a challenge: Ask them to compare and contrast Judaism with Christianity or another major religion.

Resources Needed

  • Printed images/real objects for the mystery box task
  • Quiz sheets for Jewish symbols & practices
  • Large paper and markers for poster creation

Teacher's Reflection

  • Did students engage well in discussions?
  • Did they grasp why these traditions and symbols are important?
  • What could be adjusted for next time?

This lesson provides an interactive, engaging introduction to Judaism, helping Year 7 students understand key beliefs, symbols, and celebrations in a way that is both age-appropriate and curriculum-aligned.
