Introduction to Technology
Overview
This 60-minute interactive lesson introduces students aged 9-10 (Year 5, Key Stage 2) to the concept of technology. Through exploration, discussion, and a collaborative group activity, students will understand what technology is, its significance in everyday life, and begin to appreciate its historical development as a foundation for the "Tech Through Time" unit.

- Large sheets of paper or poster boards
- Colouring pens / markers
- Set of everyday objects or images representing technology (e.g., smartphone, bicycle, light bulb, clock)
- Timer or stopwatch
- Sticky notes
- Pre-prepared "Tech Through Time" timeline poster (to be used in future lessons)
Lesson Structure
1. Starter – What is Technology? (10 minutes)
Activity: Think-Pair-Share
- Write the word "Technology" on the board.
- Ask students to think silently for 1 minute: "What does technology mean to you?"
- Pair students up (2 groups given 5 students total) to share their thoughts for 3 minutes.
- Each pair reports back 1 or 2 ideas to the whole class.
- Teacher writes a student-friendly working definition on the board, e.g., "Technology is anything made by people to help them do tasks or solve problems."
Pedagogical focus: Activate prior knowledge and encourage verbal reasoning.
2. Main Activity – Everyday Technologies Hunt (30 minutes)
Activity: Group Technology Exploration
- Divide the class into two groups (Group A: 3 students, Group B: 2 students) for a dynamic discussion and hands-on task.
- Provide each group with a box or collection of everyday objects and/or printed images representing different technologies (both modern and traditional).
- Task: Sort these into “Technology We Use Every Day” and “Other Stuff” categories on their large sheet of paper.
- Encourage students to annotate or draw examples of other technologies not in the box that they use at home or school. They add these with sticky notes around their work.
Teacher role: Circulate to prompt with questions -
- Which of these technologies do you use every day?
- Why do you think this object counts as technology?
- Can you think of examples outside this selection?
Extension: For the faster group, ask them to rank the technologies by importance or frequency of use and explain their choices to the class.
3. Plenary – Real World Technology Discussion (15 minutes)
Activity: Group Reflection
- Bring the groups together and create a combined list of technologies they use daily on the board.
- Facilitate a short whole-class discussion on:
- How does technology make life easier?
- Can you think of any problems or challenges caused by technology?
- How do different technologies work together in our lives?
Formative Assessment: Use individual sticky notes for each student to write one new thing they learned about technology today and one question they still have. Collect and review to inform future lessons.
4. Wrap-Up and Homework Task (5 minutes)
- Recap key ideas: What is technology? Why do we use it?
- Introduce the unit’s big idea: “Technology has changed how people live and work throughout history.”
- Homework challenge (optional): Students take a “technology diary” – make a note of all the technologies they use the next day and be ready to share next lesson.
Differentiation Strategies
- For additional support: Use visual aids and real objects for clearer understanding; prompt with example questions; ensure paired talk for confidence-building.
- For advanced learners: Challenge them to identify technology that is “invisible” or less obvious (e.g., water purification systems, sanitation infrastructure). Extend to early history of technology (simple tools vs complex machines).
