Overview
This 50-minute lesson is designed for Year 9 students studying Geography as part of the National Curriculum for England. It is the fifth lesson in the 30-lesson unit Exploring Earth's Features. The focus is to understand the process of longshore drift and its significance in coastal geomorphology, linking closely with Coastal Landscapes as specified in the Geography KS3 Programme of Study.

Lesson Structure (50 minutes)
1. Starter (5 minutes)
Engage students with a quick recall quiz:
- What are the main processes shaping coasts? (Expected answer: erosion, transportation, deposition)
- Have you heard the term ‘longshore drift’ before? What do you think it means?
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and set the scene for today’s focus.
2. Introduction – Concept Explanation (10 minutes)
Teacher Input: Brief teacher-led explanation supported by diagrams on the whiteboard.
- Define longshore drift: Movement of sediments along the coast by wave action hitting the shore at an angle.
- Explain the swash (diagonal movement) and backwash (perpendicular) and how this zigzag movement moves sediment sideways.
- Show diagrams of beaches and coastal features formed by this process.
Check for understanding:
- Ask guided questions such as “Why do waves approach the shore at an angle?”
- “What happens to the sediment on the beach?”
3. Main Activity – Practical Demonstration (20 minutes)
Set up the “Longshore Drift Model”:
- Five students, each with a role: two spray water to simulate angled waves, one moves pebbles, one records movements, one sketches observations.
- Use the tray, water, and pebbles to model the swash and backwash and directional sediment movement.
Task:
- Observe how the pebbles move along the tray’s edge, moving in a zigzag pattern.
- Sketch the movement of sediment on the worksheet.
- Identify visible coastal features in the model (e.g., accumulation forming a spit shape).
Teacher Role: Circulate, ask probing questions, encourage scientific vocabulary (“deposition”, “transportation”, “energy of waves”).
4. Consolidation – Class Discussion & Sketch (10 minutes)
- Students explain in pairs or small groups how they think longshore drift affects real coastlines.
- Show photographs or high-quality illustrations of real-world coastal features made by longshore drift (if available, from textbooks or own classroom resources).
- Students annotate their sketches from the practical to match real-world examples.
5. Plenary & Assessment (5 minutes)
Exit Ticket: On a mini-whiteboard or paper, write down:
- One key fact about longshore drift.
- One coastal feature formed by it.
- One question they still have about longshore drift.
Assessment: Informal formative assessment through exit tickets and observation of practical participation.
Differentiation
- Support: Provide a simplified diagram and glossary of technical terms.
- Challenge: Ask students to explain how human activity may interrupt longshore drift and coastal sediment supply.
Homework / Extension
Research a local UK coastal feature shaped by longshore drift (e.g., Spurn Point, Norfolk Coast). Prepare one interesting fact to share in the next lesson.
