Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (5 mins)
Engage prior knowledge with a quick Q&A:
Ask students:
- “Can anyone name some mammals you know?”
- “What do you think all mammals have in common when they are born?”
- Jot their ideas on the board.
- Show a short, colourful animation or diagram illustrating the life cycle stages of a generic mammal (birth, growth, adult, reproduction).
2. Main Teaching (15 mins)
Discussion and explanation:
- Present key vocabulary: mammal, embryo, juvenile, adult, offspring, life cycle, reproduction.
- Explain the main life cycle stages of mammals:
- Birth (often live birth)
- Growth from infant to juvenile (dependent on mother, milk feeding)
- Maturity and reproduction
- Highlight that all mammals share these stages but timings and appearances vary.
- Discuss interesting examples:
- Humans have babies that develop in the womb.
- Bats have live young but they grow wings!
- Whales give birth underwater but still nurse their babies.
- Incorporate short clips or high-quality images to illustrate.
3. Activity: "Same and Different" Picture Sort (10 mins)
Setup:
- Divide the class into small groups of 5.
- Provide each group with sets of picture cards depicting life stages of different mammals.
Instructions:
- Groups sort the images into the mammal types and arrange them in life cycle order.
- Then, they identify what is the same (e.g., all mammals feed their babies milk) and what is different (e.g., habitat, size at birth, development speed) across their chosen mammals.
- Using sticky notes, groups write down 2 similarities and 2 differences and stick them next to their display.
Teacher role:
- Circulate groups, prompt with questions:
- “How do these babies get food?”
- “Are there any mammals that don’t give birth live?” (Discuss monotremes briefly if age-appropriate)
