Curriculum Framework

This lesson aligns with the National Curriculum for Physical Education in the UK, specifically focusing on the objectives under Key Stage 2 (years 3-6), which promote physical competence and an understanding of how to use skills effectively in competitive situations.

Resources Needed

  • 6 footballs (size 4)
  • Cones (12)
  • Bibs (6, in two colours)
  • Stopwatch or timer
  • Whistle
  • Marked playing area (30m x 20m)

Class Structure

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Dynamic Stretching: Begin with a light jog around the perimeter of the area, lasting 2 minutes.
  • Foot Coordination Drills:
    1. High knees for 30 seconds
    2. Butt kicks for 30 seconds
    3. Side shuffles for 1 minute
  • Breifing: Explain today’s focus on dribbling techniques for better ball control.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

Station Rotations (3 minutes each)

Divide students into pairs and rotate through 4 stations with the following drills:

  1. Inside Foot Dribble

    • Equipment: 2 cones (5m apart)
    • Activity: Students dribble the ball using the inside of their foot from one cone to the other, focusing on touch and control.
    • Objective: Develop sensitivity to the ball and control using the inside of the foot.
  2. Outside Foot Control

    • Equipment: 2 cones (5m apart)
    • Activity: Students use the outside of their foot to dribble between cones.
    • Objective: Improve comfort and versatility with using different foot surfaces.
  3. Keep-It-Up Challenge

    • Equipment: Football
    • Activity: Students attempt to keep the ball in the air using only their feet, thighs, and head.
    • Objective: Enhance overall ball control and confidence.
  4. Cone Weaving

    • Equipment: 6 cones arranged in a zig-zag pattern
    • Activity: Students dribble through the cones using various parts of the foot, alternating between inside and outside foot touches.
    • Objective: Develop agility and close control in tight spaces.

Transition between stations should be quick; use a whistle to signal time.

Cool Down (5 minutes)

  • Static Stretching: Focus on lower body muscles (quads, hamstrings, calves).
  • Breathing: Spend the last minute on deep breathing exercises to promote relaxation.

Assessment Strategy

  • Observation: Monitor student engagement and technique during each drill.
  • Peer Feedback: Students provide constructive feedback to each other on their dribbling techniques.
  • Wrap-Up Discussion: Hold a discussion about what techniques they found easier and why, encouraging self-reflection.

Extension Activities

  • Skill Challenge: Create a mini-tournament where students apply their dribbling skills in a friendly match situation.
  • Home Assignment: Encourage students to practice dribbling at home or in a local park, reporting back on their progress in the next class.

Reflection

Post-lesson, hold a brief session for students to share their thoughts on the exercises. What did they find challenging? What skills did they improve?

Teacher Notes

  • Ensure plenty of encouragement and positive reinforcement throughout the lesson.
  • Be alert to each student's skill level and adapt activities as necessary for differentiation.
  • Focus on incorporating fun elements to enhance the enjoyment of learning football skills.

This structured approach fosters a supportive learning environment, building fundamental skills while encouraging teamwork and active participation.
