Lesson Structure

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Objective Overview:
   • Greet the students and introduce the objective of the lesson.
   • Explain how mastering sentence construction, expanding vocabulary, and practicing conversation are crucial for their academic development and everyday communication.

Warm-Up Activity (5 minutes)

1. Quick Sentence Challenge:
   • Divide the class into pairs.
   • Give each pair a simple sentence.
   • Ask them to expand the sentence by adding descriptive words (adjectives, adverbs) and additional information.
   • Pairs share their expanded sentences with the class.

Main Lesson Activities (35 minutes)

Activity 1: Sentence Construction Exercise (15 minutes)

1. Interactive Sentence Building:
   • Use the projector to display a basic sentence: "The cat sat."
   • As a class, brainstorm ways to make the sentence more complex. (E.g., "The lazy, grey cat sat silently on the worn-out, comfortable armchair.")
   • Write the suggestions on the board.
   • Distribute handouts with similar basic sentences.
   • Students individually expand these sentences within 5 minutes.
   • Share some expanded sentences with the class, discussing the enhancements.

Activity 2: Vocabulary Flashcards (10 minutes)

1. Vocabulary Building:
   • Distribute flashcards with challenging vocabulary words.
   • Each student gets one minute to come up with a sentence using their word.
   • Encourage them to be creative and form complex sentences.
   • Students present their sentences to the class.
   • Briefly discuss the meaning and usage of each vocabulary word.

Activity 3: Conversation Practice (10 minutes)

1. Roundtable Discussion:
   • Arrange desks/chairs in a circle.
   • Throw a ball to a student and give them a topic to discuss (e.g., their favourite book, a recent movie they watched, or a local event).
   • The student has to construct a few sentences and then throw the ball to another student, who picks up the conversation using sentence starters provided on the board (e.g., "Furthermore," "On the other hand," "Interestingly,").
   • Ensure every student gets a chance to speak and maintain the flow of conversation.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Wrap-Up and Reflection:
   • Reiterate the importance of sentence construction, rich vocabulary, and effective conversation skills.
   • Ask students to reflect on what they learned.
   • Quick feedback session: what did they enjoy the most about the lesson?
   • Assign a brief homework: write a short paragraph about their day using complex sentences and at least 3 new vocabulary words from the flashcards.
