Lesson Structure
1. Introduction / Hook (5 minutes)
Engage with a real-life context:
"Imagine you have 67 sweets, and you gave 25 to your friends. How many do you have left? You need to find the answer quickly in your head – can you?"
- Use this to encourage mental strategies, not written methods.
- Encourage pupils to think about the numbers (60 + 7, subtract 20, subtract 5).
Key Questions:
- What is the biggest part of the number 67 that is easy to subtract from mentally?
- How can breaking the number into parts help you subtract faster?
- Could using what you know about subtracting tens help?
AFL Check:
Ask pupils to share their thinking aloud or write it on mini whiteboards.
2. Modelling and Explanation (8 minutes)
- Model subtraction of 67 – 25 mentally on the board, explicitly verbalising each step:
- "I see 67 as 60 + 7. I subtract 20 first, which is 47, then subtract 5, which equals 42."
- Highlight the use of place value and known facts (20 + 5 = 25).
- Use the example below for pupils to copy into their books:
67 - 25
= (60 + 7) - (20 + 5)
= (60 - 20) + (7 - 5)
= 40 + 2
= 42

- Understanding: Why do we split the numbers into tens and ones?
- Applying: Can you try this method for 54 - 23? What happens if the ones are smaller?

3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Subtraction tasks with increasing difficulty:
- Start with two-digit numbers subtracting ones (e.g., 52 - 7)
- Move to tens and ones (e.g., 83 - 46)
- Progress to two two-digit numbers where borrowing may be needed but done mentally (e.g., 74 - 38).
Activity: Pupils complete set problems on mini-whiteboards first, then write in books:
- 45 - 12
- 61 - 29
- 70 - 34
- 54 - 27

- How did you decide which part of the number to subtract first?
- Did you adjust your strategy when the number in the ones place was smaller than the number you had to subtract?

4. Independent Task (5 minutes)

- Challenge: 92 - 58, 85 - 49 (involving decomposition mentally)
Pupils complete independently, encouraged to write down mental steps if needed.
5. Plenary (2 minutes)
Class Discussion:
- Ask volunteers to share their mental subtraction strategies – which method did they find most helpful and why?
- Present a difficult problem on the board (e.g., 81 - 47) and invite different pupils to explain how they solved it mentally.

- What advice would you give a friend who finds mental subtraction tricky?
- Can you think of a real-life situation where mental subtraction could help you?
Extension / Homework Ideas
- Practise mental subtraction with number stories (e.g., money, time).
