Overview

In this lesson, students will continue the mini-tournament introduced in the previous lesson. The focus will be on teamwork and strategy adjustments required for effective play. Students will form small teams to compete while applying the skills they've learned throughout the unit.

Lesson Duration

30 students, divided into 5 teams of 6.

Equipment Needed

• 6 footballs
• Cones (for marking boundaries and goals)
• Pinnies or bibs (to distinguish teams)
• Whistle
• Stopwatch

Lesson Structure

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Dynamic Stretching: Lead students through a series of dynamic stretches (e.g., leg swings, arm circles) to prepare their bodies for activity.
• Ball Control Drills: Each student practices dribbling the ball with their feet while moving around a designated area marked with cones.

Mini-Tournament Setup (5 minutes)

• Organise the teams into five groups of six, ensuring a mix of skills and abilities.
• Explain tournament format: each team will play against another team for 5 minutes, with a 1-minute changeover.
• Assign each team a field area and outline the scoring system (1 point for a goal scored).

Mini-Tournament Matches (15 minutes)

1. Teams will compete in round-robin matches.
2. Use a stopwatch to keep track of time, ensuring clarity on match duration and changeovers.
3. While students are playing, circulate among the teams to observe and provide real-time feedback on teamwork and strategy.
4. Implement a "team huddle" system: after each match, teams will gather for 1 minute to discuss what worked well and what adjustments they could make.

Reflection and Cool Down (5 minutes)

• Gather students in a circle to reflect on the tournament experience.
• Promote a discussion using guiding questions:
  • How did teamwork affect your performance?
  • What strategies did you find effective?
  • What would you change for next time?
• Conclude with static stretches (e.g., hamstring stretch, quad stretch) to cool down.

Assessment and Feedback

• Observe students' ability to work as a team and communicate effectively during their matches.
• Offer constructive feedback during the reflection period, focusing on specific teamwork skills and strategies.

Further Development

As this is part of an ongoing unit, suggest specific strategies or individual roles that teams could adopt in the next session, tapping into the strengths and weaknesses observed today.

Differentiation

• For less experienced players, allow them to have more opportunities to lead during team huddles.
• For more advanced players, challenge them by introducing specific roles within the team (i.e., attacker, defender) and more complex strategies to implement.
