Overview
This 60-minute lesson is designed for Year 3 students (ages 7-8) to explore how mountains are formed, in line with the National Curriculum for England Geography programme of study. The lesson builds knowledge about physical geography, focusing on landforms, while developing observational and critical thinking skills.

Lesson Structure
Starter (10 minutes)
Engage & Activate Prior Knowledge
- Begin by showing a large world map. Ask: “Can anyone find a mountain on the map?”
- Show photos of famous mountains (e.g. Ben Nevis, the Himalayas).
- Prompt discussion: “What do you already know about mountains?” Record answers on the whiteboard in two columns: Facts and Questions.
- Introduce the key question: “How are mountains formed?”
Main Teaching (20 minutes)
Interactive Explanation with Visuals and Video Animation
- Use diagrams to explain the three main ways mountains form:
- Fold Mountains – formed by collision and folding of tectonic plates (e.g., The Himalayas)
- Fault-Block Mountains – formed when large blocks of earth break and move up or down (e.g., The Sierra Nevada)
- Volcanic Mountains – formed by lava erupting and building up (e.g., Mount Etna)
- Show a short animated video (2-3 mins) depicting these processes.
- Discuss key vocabulary: tectonic plates, fold, fault, eruption, lava.
- Use quick fact cards with simple explanations; invite volunteers to read and explain to class.
Practical Activity (20 minutes)
Hands-on Modelling – Create Your Own Mountain
- Pupils work in pairs to use modelling clay/playdough to create mountains demonstrating one of the three types of formation.
- Each pair chooses or is assigned a type of mountain: fold, fault-block, or volcanic.
- Encourage creativity: add colours, label parts on paper attached to their clay models.
- Circulate to prompt and support discussions about the processes they are modelling.
Plenary (10 minutes)
Sharing and Reflecting
- Each pair presents their model, explaining how their mountain was formed using the key vocabulary.
- As a class, revisit the initial questions on the whiteboard. Confirm answers or research as needed.
- Complete a short worksheet with:
- Fill-in-the-blanks (matching processes to mountain types).
- Draw and label a simple mountain diagram.
- Summarise main points: mountains are formed by natural earth movements over millions of years.
Assessment for Learning
- Observation of participation and understanding during discussion and modelling activity.

Differentiation
- For SEN and lower ability: Provide sentence starters and labelled diagrams for the worksheet. Offer extra support during modelling.
- For higher ability: Challenge pupils to write a few sentences explaining the process in their own words or describe why mountains are important to people and wildlife in those areas.
Extension Ideas (Optional extra activities)
- Research project: Find out about a famous mountain and present a mini-report including formation, location, and interesting facts.
- Geography walk in local area to identify hills and discuss their formation compared to mountains.
