Lesson Structure

1. Flying Start (10 minutes)

• Show a short, engaging time-lapse video of a mountain range at sunrise or dramatic footage of mountain landscapes.
• Ask pupils: “What can you see in the video? What makes these places look like mountains?”
• Initiate a quick class brainstorm: “What do you already know about mountains?” Write answers on the board.

2. Introduction and Question (10 minutes)

• Introduce learning question: “What are the features of a mountain range?”
• Share Success Criteria and WALT with the class.
• Present key vocabulary: peak, ridge, valley, foothills, slope, summit, plateau.
• Use visual flashcards with pictures and clear dyslexia-friendly text.
• Discuss each word with 1-2 examples and invite pupils to use the new words in sentences.

3. Main Task (30 minutes)

a. Group Activity (15 minutes)

• Divide class into 6 groups (5 pupils each).
• Give each group an OS map excerpt or a satellite image of a mountain range (make sure to represent different ranges – UK and global).
• Provide mountain feature label cards.
• Task: Identify and place labels on the map/image showing different mountain features.
• Encourage use of atlases and keywords to help reasoning.
• Teacher and TA circulate to question groups: “What feature is this? Why do you think so?”
• Support dyslexic pupils through paired reading of map keys or sentence prompts.

b. Individual Work (15 minutes)

• Children complete a worksheet where they:
• Match definitions to mountain features.
• Draw and label a simple mountain range using the features learned.
