Musical Truth Skills

Overview

Students will practise key AQA Language Paper 2 style skills using the non-fiction text Musical Truth. They will learn to select evidence, analyse language and structure, and write accurate, persuasive responses using Standard English and clear paragraphing.

Learning intentions

• Students will identify and interpret how writers use language, vocabulary, and figurative devices to present meaning.
• Students will explain the effect of text structure and organisational features on the reader.
• Students will choose relevant quotations and build sustained paragraphs for a Paper 2 response.
• Students will control sentence construction and use age-appropriate subject terminology when discussing reading and writing.

Success criteria

• I can find precise quotations that link to the question.
• I can explain how specific word choices and techniques affect the reader.
• I can analyse structure (e.g. shifts, emphasis, sequencing) and link it to meaning.
• I can write a well-structured paragraph in Standard English using accurate terminology.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Starter: question decode. Teacher displays one AQA-style question on the board and models highlighting key instruction words (e.g. analyse, effects, writer’s methods). Students underline the “do” words and predict what evidence they will need.

2. 5–15 min · Text reading: evidence hunt. Teacher gives a short focus excerpt from Musical Truth (or the full class text if timings allow) and instructs students to read actively, circling striking vocabulary and marking moments of structural change (e.g. new paragraph focus, contrast, emphasis). Students complete a quick “evidence tally” table: quotation + what it suggests + possible technique label.

3. 15–27 min · Mini-teach: language effect chain. Teacher models one paragraph using a clear chain: Quote → Identify technique/word class → Explain effect on reader → Link to overall meaning. Students practise the chain with a second quotation, writing their explanation in 3 sentences.

4. 27–40 min · Guided analysis: structure focus. Teacher introduces a structure prompt: how the writer organises ideas (beginning hook, contrast, sequencing, pacing, emphasis near the end). Students reread marked sections and choose one structural feature, then draft a short “structure sentence” using a stem: “The writer positions __ at __ to __, which makes the reader feel/understand __.” Teacher circulates for terminology accuracy (e.g. contrast, emphasis, sequencing, tone shift).

5. 40–52 min · AQA Paper 2 writing: timed paragraph. Teacher sets a 12-minute writing window for one extended response paragraph (choose from the Paper 2-style prompt provided). Students plan using a 4-point plan (claim, 2–3 pieces of evidence, analysis link to question) and then write an organised paragraph with topic sentence and embedded quotations.

6. 52–58 min · Peer assessment: success criteria check. Teacher gives a simple checklist aligned to the success criteria: evidence precision, analysis of language, analysis of structure, Standard English/control. Students swap work and “tick + one improvement” on one area (e.g. add technique name; extend effect explanation).

7. 58–60 min · Exit ticket. Students answer: “Write one sentence starting with a structure link, and name one technique you used today.” Teacher collects for next lesson grouping.

Assessment

• Formative checks during circulation: evidence selection and technique naming.
• Live review in the mini-teach: students’ “language effect chain” accuracy.
• Peer assessment using the checklist to confirm understanding of evidence + effect + structure.
• Exit ticket to assess whether students can write a structure-linked sentence and use terminology.

Differentiation

• Support: provide sentence starters, a bank of techniques/terminology (e.g. contrast, metaphor, personification, rhetorical question, juxtaposition, emphasis), and a model paragraph for one example.
• Support for SEN: reduce the writing to one focused paragraph with an easier evidence requirement (e.g. one quote + one structure reference) and offer a guided plan template.
• Extension: challenge students to integrate two techniques in one explanation (e.g. vocabulary choice + figurative language) and to add a brief comparison of two moments of structure (early vs late emphasis).
• EAL: allow bilingual planning notes, then require the final explanation to include at least three English technique/effect terms and complete sentences in Standard English.
