Lesson Plan

Duration: 50 minutes

Introduction (5 minutes)

Begin the lesson with a brief discussion about the weather and recent news. Ask students if they have heard about any natural events happening around the world (e.g., earthquakes, hurricanes). Write down some of their answers on the whiteboard.

Activity 1: What Are Natural Hazards? (10 minutes)

Provide a basic definition of natural hazards and explain that they are extreme weather and seismic events that occur naturally and have potential harmful effects. Highlight that common types include earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.

Discussion Points:

• Ask the students to think about why these events happen.
• Discuss how natural hazards can be both sudden and predictable.

Activity 2: Causes of Natural Hazards (15 minutes)

Distribute the worksheets that focus on different natural hazards and their causes. Students will work in pairs to complete the sections. The worksheet will cover:

• Earthquakes: Caused by the movement of tectonic plates.
• Volcanoes: Formed by magma escaping from the Earth's crust.
• Hurricanes: Result from warm moist air rising over warm ocean surfaces.
• Floods: Occur when water overflows onto normally dry land.
• Tornadoes: Caused by severe thunderstorms when warm, moist air collides with cold, dry air.

Worksheet Example: Students will fill in the blanks and draw simple diagrams to illustrate the causes of each type of natural hazard.

Activity 3: Interactive Video and Discussion (10 minutes)

Show a short video clip (2-3 minutes) of a natural hazard occurring. Facilitating engagement, ask the students the following questions:

• What natural hazard did you observe?
• What were its immediate effects?
• Could humans predict or prepare for this event?

Activity 4: Map Exercise (5 minutes)

Using a world map, ask students to use coloured pencils to mark at least three areas where recent natural hazards have occurred. Encourage them to think about why these areas are prone to certain hazards.

Conclusion and Debrief (5 minutes)

Conclude the lesson by revisiting the initial list on the whiteboard. Add any new ideas gained during the class. Summarise that while natural hazards are inevitable, understanding them can help mitigate their impact on society.

Closing Reflection: Ask each student to share one new thing they learned about natural hazards with the class.
