Overview
This 45-minute lesson is designed for Year 11 middle-ability students studying Edexcel Biology Unit 9: Ecosystems, focusing specifically on the Nitrogen Cycle. Lesson Structure
1. Starter (5 minutes)

- Students work in pairs to match words with short definitions on flashcards.
- SEN support: Use simplified flashcards with pictures alongside words.

2. Introduction / Input (10 minutes)
Activity: Teacher-led explanation & video
- Use a labelled diagram of the nitrogen cycle on the board to teach the key stages.
- Explain each stage clearly, repeating and paraphrasing for clarity.
- Show a short animated clip explaining the nitrogen cycle with captions.
- Pause for quick comprehension checks with questioning (e.g. “What happens during nitrogen fixation?”).
- SEN scaffolding: Provide a printed copy of the diagram with some missing labels as a preview.
3. Main Activity (20 minutes)
Task 1: Scaffolded Diagram Completion (10 minutes)
- In pairs, students complete a partly labelled nitrogen cycle diagram worksheet.
- SEN pupils receive a diagram with labels to match and fill in, plus sentence starters for explanations.
- Middle ability pupils complete labels independently then write explanations next to each stage using sentence scaffolds.
Task 2: Gap Fill Paragraph (10 minutes)
- Students complete a gap-fill worksheet describing processes in the nitrogen cycle.
- Differentiated versions:
- SEN: simpler sentences with word bank provided.
- Middle ability: more complex sentences with fewer clues.

4. Plenary (7 minutes)
Activity: Mini whiteboard quiz and peer explanation
- Teacher asks rapid-fire questions about the nitrogen cycle processes.
