Overview
This 45-minute lesson is designed for Year 1 students (ages 5-6) to support them in recognising, reading and understanding numbers 1 to 20 as numerals. It is lesson 6 of 25 in the "Counting Adventures Ahead" unit, aligning with the National Curriculum for England (Mathematics programme of study: Number - Number and place value).
Students will develop their number sense through multisensory activities utilising visual aids, number cards, engaging games, and interactive whole-class and group work. The emphasis is on recognising numbers as symbols and linking them to quantities.

Mathematics – Number: Number and place value (Year 1)
- Read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words
- Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number
- Recognise the place of each digit in two-digit numbers (tens, ones) [Introduction]
Key Stage 1 Programme of Study (Mathematics)
- Develop a secure understanding of number through varied representations and concrete materials.
- Build fluency in number recognition to support addition and subtraction skills later in the unit.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will:
- Accurately recognise and read aloud numbers 1-20 in numeral form.
- Match numerals to quantities using visual aids (objects and pictorial representations).
- Demonstrate confidence in ordering numbers from 1 to 20.
Resources Needed
- Printable large number cards (1–20) in colourful, clear font
- Sets of smaller number cards (1–20) for individual and group use
- Counting objects (e.g., cubes, counters, buttons)
- Number line displayed on the board (1 to 20)
- Interactive whiteboard/slideshow with numbers and quantities
- Matching worksheets (numbers and dot patterns) for independent practice
- Stickers or stamps for positive reinforcement
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
Engage Through a Story (5 minutes)
- Begin with a short imaginative story about a character (e.g., a friendly dragon or robot) on a counting adventure to find treasures numbered 1 to 20.
- Show the number cards from 1 to 20 on the board in order, with lively visuals.
- Encourage choral reading: all students say the numbers aloud together as you point to each card.
Focused Guided Practice (5 minutes)
- Use an interactive "Number Flash" game: flash number cards quickly, and students shout out the number they see.
- Vary the speed to build fluency. Celebrate enthusiastic and accurate responses with stickers or praise.
2. Main Activity (25 minutes)
Number Matching and Visualisation (15 minutes)
- Split students into groups of 5 for a hands-on matching activity.
- Provide each group with a set of small number cards and a collection of counting objects.
- Task: For each number card, groups count out the corresponding number of objects, matching numeral to quantity.
- Circulate to prompt accurate counting and support reading numerals.
- Encourage students to verbalise: "This is number 7, I have counted 7 cubes."
Interactive Number Line Ordering (10 minutes)
- Regroup students for a whole class task using the large number line.
- Call out numbers randomly between 1 and 20, and invite volunteers to come place the matching number card in the correct place on the number line.
- Use questioning to reinforce ordering concepts: “Which number comes before 14? Which comes after 9?”
- Incorporate backwards counting by removing a few number cards and asking students to fill in the gaps.
3. Plenary and Assessment (10 minutes)
Independent Matching Worksheet
- Hand out a simple worksheet with numbers 1-20 and corresponding dot patterns or arrays to match.
- Students draw lines between the numeral and matching visual dot pattern.
- Collect the worksheets to assess individual understanding.
Oral Recap and Praise
- End with a quick round: flash random number cards, and students read aloud.
- Ask a few volunteers to say a full sentence: "Number 12 is twelve."
Differentiation
- Support: Provide a number line on each desk for visual support. Use pairing or shadowing with teaching assistants to reinforce recognition.
- Challenge: For faster learners, introduce writing number words for 1-10 or simple sequencing puzzles with missing numbers within 1-20.
- Incorporate physical movement by asking students to jump or clap the number of times corresponding to a given numeral.
Assessment for Learning
- Observation of students’ participation in reading and matching activities.
- Review of independent matching worksheets to check recognition accuracy.
- Informal questioning during the number line activity to assess ordering understanding.
Reflection and Next Steps
- Note which students require further practise recognising numerals beyond 10.
- Plan to incorporate more number formation activities in the next lessons.
- Use formative assessment to personalise support in subsequent addition and subtraction lessons.
Teacher’s Notes
- Keep tone lively and supportive to maintain engagement. Use visual, verbal, and tactile learning styles.
- Reinforce number vocabulary explicitly, e.g., “How do we say this number? What is this numeral called?”
- Encourage peer discussion and teamwork during group activities to foster communication and reasoning skills.
This lesson, rooted in the National Curriculum framework, provides a robust, multisensory approach to building number recognition and fluency from 1 to 20 — a crucial foundation for Year 1 mathematicians on their counting adventures.
