Overview

This 60-minute lesson is designed for Reception children (age 4-5) to develop their understanding of the sequence of numbers 1-20, with particular focus on 10-20. Children will practise counting aloud, recognising numerical order, and forming numerals 1-9 with correct orientation. The lesson supports the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, particularly the following areas:

    • Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20.
    • Place numbers in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number.

Lesson Structure

1. Starter: Let’s Count to 10 (10 mins)

  • Gather children in a circle on the carpet.
  • Chant as a group, counting to 10 together with clear, enthusiastic voice.
  • In pairs, children whisper and then say number sequences 1-10.
  • Quick group quiz: “What comes after 7? What comes before 3?” to check number order knowledge up to 10.

2. Extending Counting from 10 to 20 (15 mins)

  • Call out numbers 10-20 with the class repeating after you.
  • Select 6 children to each hold number cards 10-15.
  • Line them up DISORDERED intentionally.
  • Ask the class:
    • “What’s wrong with the order I made?”
    • “Which number should be first? Why?”
    • “What comes next?”
    • “What is one more than 12, for example?”
  • Encourage children to explain their thinking aloud.
  • Once corrected, extend by adding numbers 16-20 if ready.
  • Lay out the correct sequence visibly on the floor or wall for children to reference.

3. Activity: Complete the Number Track to 20 (20 mins)

  • Give children a blank number track printout or use large floor tape number track missing numbers up to 20.
  • Children work in pairs or small groups to fill in the missing numbers from 1-20.
  • Encourage looking for visual number patterns or sequences to help.
  • Support children to say each number aloud as they place or write it.
  • Challenge: Identify which numbers come after or before, reinforcing ‘one more / less’.

4. Numeral Formation Practice (10 mins)

  • Demonstrate how to form numerals 1-9 one by one, highlighting correct starting point and direction (e.g. "start at the top for the number 1").
  • Children practise on whiteboards or in sand trays/chalk.
  • Circulate to provide positive, specific feedback using language such as:
    • “Well done for starting at the top!”
    • “Try going downwards like this.”
  • Use visual prompts to reinforce correct strokes.
  • Encourage children to verbalise the steps as they write.

5. Plenary: Number Line Game & Reflection (5 mins)

  • Gather children and place 10-20 number cards in random order on the floor.
  • Call on children to quickly find “the next number” or “one more than...” and place it in correct order.
  • Reflect verbally: “What was easy about today? What did you learn about numbers?”
  • Award “Number Detective” stickers for participation or spotting errors in the earlier task.

Differentiation

  • For Less Confident Learners:
    Use number tracks with visual clues (e.g., dot patterns matching the number) and work with adult support for counting aloud.
  • For More Confident Learners:
    Challenge to sequence all numbers 1-20 independently and write numerals 1-9 without prompts.
  • Provide a tactile element (sand trays/chalk) to support fine motor skills linked to numeral formation.
