Lesson Structure

Starter (10 mins)

  1. Engage and Inspire:
    Begin by showing a few impressive examples of finished observational food drawings. Use the visualiser or examples from previous students (if available) to showcase the level of detail achievable using the grid method.

    • Encourage variety in choices to avoid repetition across the class and foster creativity.

    • Distribute laminated A4 grid overlays to students and ask them to line them up over their chosen image.
    • On their A3 paper, instruct students to lightly draw a matching grid with their pencils (same number of squares as their image grid). Ensure students understand the importance of proportion and measuring from edge to edge for accuracy.
  3. Step 3 – Sketching the Food Item (25 mins):

    • Students work square by square to transfer details from their chosen image onto their own paper. Emphasise beginning with the outline and basic shapes before moving into detailed textures and tonal shading. Provide advice as needed, e.g.:
      • Tonal Focus: Show how darker areas can be added in layers with a 6B pencil.
      • Texture: Experiment with pencil pressure and direction to mimic different food textures (e.g., the smooth surface of an apple vs the fluffy icing of a cupcake).

    • Circulate the room to give individualised feedback and troubleshoot challenges.

Plenary and Reflection (5 mins)

    • Organise a short gallery walk by having students lay their work on their desk. As they walk around, ask each student to select one peer’s work and leave a positive comment verbally or on sticky notes provided.

  • Extension Activity: Ask fast finishers to create another observational drawing, this time without using the grid method, to compare the outcomes.

  • Observe students' application of the grid method as they work.
  • Assess the completed drawings for:
    • Proportion: Are details correctly placed within each grid square?
    • Tonal work: Is there a clear use of light and shadow?
    • Accuracy and detail: Does the drawing resemble the original image?
